now for the updating...

As predicted, returning by Tube yesterday was a hellish experience. A mixture of sauna temperatures, grizzly faces, raised armpits and nausea-inducing vapours. Just another day in London's heatwave.

Today, I threw caution to the wind and came dressed to work in a T-shirt and shorts. Everyone is looking at me as if I'm some kind of genious. In half-hour I will descend with Megan into the gym-crypt and pump muscle to the sound of Satisfaction. I'm sure you know what song I'm talking about. It's the one where girls are using drills in the video. Tasty.

******************

I woke up in the middle of the night with some sad thoughts: feelings of hopelessness because I don't know where my life is going; slight anguish at the thought of never succeeding as a novelist, or even just as a hack. Then The Beatles song "All You Need is Love" came into my head, and as corny as that sounds, I was calmed. I used to meditate and practice yoga a few years ago, and the one thing I came away from that period was the belief that we are responsible to a great extent for the reality we live in... what I mean is that, no matter how horrible your life is, if you allow your survival instincts to kick in, if you face the challenge with self-love, with faith, then you will conquer it.

I know it sounds bad saying this, when so many people on this planet are stuck in horrible lives, but I have to believe it. If not, there's only an endless pit of nihilism facing us... and it's a place I don't want to go.

So "All You Need is Love" is for me a type of mantra, a belief that if I put love into my writing, love into my relationships, love into my view of the world, I can subvert the horrors of greed, cynicism and despair; I can make a tiny garden grow from a plot of dried land. Are you with me?

Like a Prayer

Someone from my work took the Tube in the afternoon and witnessed two women passing out because of the heat...

in 6 minutes I'm leaving - and taking the Tube.
