Another Attempt to Break In

Yesterday morning, on returning from the swimming pool, I ran into a pair of police officers coming out of my building. They had a woman with them, from the basement floor, who climbed into their van and drove away with them. I thought she might have called them because of the man with epilepsy who lives in my building (though I never stopped to consider why she would need to go to the police station with them.)

Today, Natalia told me that she ran into these same police officers yesterday (probably when they were arriving) and they asked her if she had heard anything suspicious: someone had tried to break into our building again.

This made me realize that, on leaving the building to go to the swimming pool, I noticed a young man standing by our door, talking on his mobile phone. As I opened the door, he turned his body away from me so I couldn't see his face. I wonder if it was him? I was suspicious at the time, and I remember turning around to check whether he would sneak through the door I had just left open (one of those doors that automatically closes behind you and locks itself.) He didn't sneak in then, but I wonder if he then tried to get in through other means.

Wow -- sounds like a lucky escape. Hope you have good insurance. :(

No, but we did buy a brand new cleaver knife! Keep an eye out for the next Crime Watch UK because I just might be in it.

meh, I thought you guys liked your building? felt safe there? do you still?

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2006-01-13 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm alright I guess, but I worry about the girls. So far, I think it's only people trying to get into empty apartments... it doesn't seem to be a gang of robbers (which would terrify me). Perhaps this will increase police presence in the area and make it a bit safer.

hopefully you'll feel safer soon. how do you feel about an "increased police presence" since July? what's been going on there, is there a noticeable difference to the city in any way?

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2006-01-13 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)
We don't see machine guns, or anything like that, but I've heard that some Tubes now have machines that scan for explosive traces. The police over here seems to work more with tracking possible suspects down, etc, instead of scaring the shit out of us.

yeah, I hated the huge guns with two-inch bullets down in the subway when I first got here (a year after 9/11). I mean, what are they really gonna do with them? shoot someone? I just don't feel they could ever be of any use in a real situation.

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2006-01-13 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Perhaps they think it will freak them out and make the suspects betray themselves. But, if you are dealing with people willing to blow themselves up, that seems pretty useless.

*nods* that's what I think.

Let's never be housemates, mmmkay?

[identity profile] dilvsy.livejournal.com 2006-01-13 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
well, i don't care what happens to me, but for your sake, yeah...you would be better off with someone who has good luck follow them, instead of bad

If we spent too much time underneath the same roof, it's possible that a comet would land on us... the kind of comet that got rid of the dinosaurs last time around.

[identity profile] dilvsy.livejournal.com 2006-01-13 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
that would be awesome

[identity profile] rebellemichelle.livejournal.com 2006-01-13 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
hmmmm that's a bit scary. why are they trying to break into empty apartments?

and perhaps now that girl is gone there will be less problems? maybe she was letting people in she shouldn't have been?

They must have thought the were empty (nobody home) though there were people there. Maybe they were kids, or junkies. Who knows?

be ware and take care of your self.
i am in a 4 plex shares a court yard with an other 4plex. 3 years back a bout 7 or 8 irish culchies were living in the flat be low us (in a 2 bed room). they never made keys so you would all ways see irish climbing the gate to the court yard with a knife or screw driver in mouth! the gate was scary it had sharp pointing spikes. once in the court yard they would push the trash bins under the window climb on the trash bins reach their window and pry it open with their knife/ screw driver. i was all ways worried. they were selling drugs and i was never sure who was climbing the gate! thank heavens they are gone.

Sounds very dodgy! I don't think I'd stay long in a building like that if I knew that was happening. Why did they leave?

[identity profile] saint-narcissus.livejournal.com 2006-01-13 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
we have "bars" on our windows and back door off the fire escape/ porch. there are 2 elder queens (mid 60's) live cross the court yard from us. 2 delightful guys. one wears a house dress at home. he is all ways in the court yard doing his plants or what not. the culchies would call out the window when they would see him "faggot" etc,,, in san francisco that does not go over at all. we talked to the owner of our buildings. he his wonderful, has grand kids etc,,, but is very very gay! he is a pillar of society in san francisco. he owns a glass and mirror company. his grand father made tons of money in 1906 after the san francisco earth quake. he is all ways in the society pages donating money to museum etc,,, any how, as soon as he found out the culchies were gone.

I'd love to see photos of this building, and the courtyard, one day!
