Zombie Nation

We saw Dawn of the Dead yesterday, instead of Monster. The movie did not disappoint. In fact, I was surprised at how good was the acting, how they managed to avoid any cheesiness. It was pure horror, terror (and a tiny bit of comedy) thrown in a bleak shopping mall for a couple of hours.

When we left the cinema, we walked for a while through the mall. I started imagining how I would behave if I was trapped in that mall, where I would find food, weapons; where I could hide. Some children were playing on a trampouline in the main atrium, and Kevin said we could use the trampouline as a weapon. I'd probably hide in Books Etc, or get some pointy spears from the African Art store. They don't sell guns in British malls. How little prepared are the British for a zombie invasion!

The movie has a black man and a strong woman for heroes. This was also the same in the original movie (in fact, in the trilogy they belong to.) George Romero wanted to break with convention and make some criticisms about our expectations in the genre. The great thing about this remake is that it doesn't concentrate as much on the "consumerists from hell" angle used in the original movie, but more on the "suburbia from hell" idea.

Go see it with a friend you can hold hands with.

Well obviously...!

Let me know - it'd be cool if you can make it, but we have been lackadaisical with our organisation...

i just asked kevin and he made a "scared" face... I think the answer is no... but thanks for inviting! If you want to do something with less adrenalin, like going to the movies or for a beer, let me know.
