The Temp Enjoys His Sunday

I woke up around 9 o'clock. My body was sore and I tried to do some yoga stretches on the bed. Kevin asked me to rub his back so I did it but with one condition: that I can call him Nevin from now on. I then got up and went to the kitchen. There were some leftover dishes from yesterday so I washed them and made some coffee and tea.

After breakfast, I lay on the couch and watched two episodes of House Doctor. I was about to embark on my third one when sense returned to my body and I went to the bedroom. I got changed (but retained the t-shirt and underwear I slept in) for going to the walk-in clinic. Kevin pointed out that it wasn't very nice of me to go to the doctors without taking a shower. Grumpily, I went to the bathroom and washed myself.

I borrowed a pound from Kevin and took the number 6 bus downtown. I sat behind some loud Portuguese people who smelled really bad. The woman was in her early forties, with long scraggly hair turning white and a bitter resonance to her voice. I got off the bus in front of John Lewis Department Store. As usual, I was struck by the general ugliness of all those people walking up and down Oxford Street. I quickly made my way to Grant & Cutler Bookstore, where I bought myself a french copy of Kundera's Identity.

The nurses in the walk-in clinic had nothing useful to say about my cough. They told me to steam my lungs 6 times a day, drink lots of fluids, sign up with a General Practitioner and have my lungs x-rayed if the cough persists after two weeks. I then scoured the bookshops on Charing Cross Road for a good scary novel but didn't find anything. My stomach betrayed me and I ended up eating cowhooves burger in Burger King. Feeling slightly chipper, I then had my head chopped off at Mr. Cutters for the nice price of 7 pounds. My executioner was from Russia and she had nice warm breasts.

I ended my afternoon by perusing more bookshops and deciding upon nothing. God damn Librian! The bus home was uneventful. I arrived home to find the apartment in a peaceful setting. I promptly called Kevin and his sisters a family of monkeys, made myself a cup of tea, and played some Gamecube.

For dinner, I made a pasta dish while listening to my Cheesy Mix. For digestion, I watched Midsomer Murders. Now, close to bedtime, I'm going to read selected Livejournals, then read my current novel The Secret History. I will then brush my teeth, lie under the duvet covers and have sweet dreams with some celebrity or other.

Holy paralell lives, Batman. I've just started "The Secret History".

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2004-08-31 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
It sure tasted like it!

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2004-08-31 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Mr. Nevin is the cutest Canadian monkey in the world. I'm liking The Secret History very much...

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2004-08-31 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Wow... everyone loves this book. I'm liking it a lot too. Have you read her latest one?

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2004-08-31 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Legal! Quando vier, voce tem que me encontrar para um cafe! :)

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2004-08-31 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Ah! How you scoff of me.

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2004-08-31 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Cool! You know, I'm looking also for the first M. Connelly novel but I can't find it anywhere! How you liking The Secret History?

[identity profile] desayuno-ingles.livejournal.com 2004-08-31 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
tell me how you like th eend. I couldn't put the book down, it was during the time I worked a lot of overtime Mondays at the Met. I got lucky a lot and was posted in out of the way places and I just read it all day on post. so fun!

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2004-08-31 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I'm enjoying the slow build up and descriptive passages... bunny is still alive! Don't tell me anything about it (for now.)

[identity profile] desayuno-ingles.livejournal.com 2004-08-31 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
no, I promise I won't tell you. that's the thing with that book - that slow buildup and the language are so good! I really, really enjoyed that book. Problem was, I tried to go to American Gods (Gaiman), right afterward and while good in his own way, he couldn't compare to SH, and it just ruined it for me.

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2004-08-31 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
Have you read her latest?

[identity profile] desayuno-ingles.livejournal.com 2004-08-31 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
she has another?!

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2004-08-31 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
Yup, it came out recently. It's called "The Little Friend"

[identity profile] desayuno-ingles.livejournal.com 2004-08-31 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
found it on ebay. there are some up in gbp. have you bought it already?

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2004-08-31 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
nope. I'll read it after The Secret History. I read the first few pages in the bookstore and it sounded good too.

[identity profile] desayuno-ingles.livejournal.com 2004-08-31 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
awesome. I think i'll find it at the library. no space.

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2004-08-31 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
All libraries here have it, so you shouldn't have a problem finding it.

[identity profile] desayuno-ingles.livejournal.com 2004-08-31 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
good. take me a bit to find the closest one in nyc and get my card.

alright, i'm off to the beach, not to rub it in your nose or anything.

lufs!

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2004-08-31 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
Have fun! Beware of the sharks...

[identity profile] desayuno-ingles.livejournal.com 2004-08-31 10:19 am (UTC)(link)
it's stingrays this part of FL and this time of year. but you just shuffle your feet and you're fine!

[identity profile] damiella.livejournal.com 2004-08-31 12:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked The Secret History, but thought it kind of falls apart at the end. I'd be interested in your thoughts when you finish.

[identity profile] naturalbornkaos.livejournal.com 2004-08-31 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I've literally only just started. I'm only about 30 pages into it, but I'll let you know what I think! :) I'd be curious to hear your opinion too. :)

The first Connelly novel? "The Black Echo"? I have that - you can borrow it if you like!

[identity profile] roguejournal.livejournal.com 2004-08-31 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
ask Nevin if he is not going to update his journal...

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2004-08-31 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Ok... if I don't find it in Paddington's library, then I'll remind you to bring it along to the next housewarming/bbq/pub excursion. ;)

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2004-08-31 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
A lot of friends have said the same. What I'll do is write a post on the book after I've read it and ask all of you for comments. Maybe we can generate an interesting discussion. ;)

[identity profile] naturalbornkaos.livejournal.com 2004-08-31 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Given we live in the same city and not actually that far away we could always *GASP*SHOCK*WHISPERS* just go for a drink... :P

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2004-08-31 03:15 pm (UTC)(link)
do you have an underwater camera?

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2004-08-31 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Nevin is too lazy. He prefers to draw comic books. :)

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2004-08-31 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, that too! In fact, I asked Rosie to speak to you guys at her housewarming, to arrange something. Was anything decided?

[identity profile] naturalbornkaos.livejournal.com 2004-08-31 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know, I was a little too drunk at Rosie and Steve's housewarming to really remember if anything was decided!

But we should DEFINITELY arrange something soon! It'd be ace to see you more often. :)

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2004-08-31 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Cool. Well, let's do that then. Fancy seeing "The Village" again?

JUST KIDDING!

[identity profile] naturalbornkaos.livejournal.com 2004-08-31 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Aiiie!!!!! The Film We Do Not Speak Of!

Nooo, definitely not. But I have a reasonably spacious calendar for the next couple of weeks - let's go get pintage and stuff!

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2004-08-31 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Ok! well, I'm working near Euston Road now, so i'm very easy on travellling.

[identity profile] naturalbornkaos.livejournal.com 2004-08-31 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, Euston station is on my way home - about 20 minutes ride (plus however long it takes for the train to arrive) from where I work...

If you fancy a post-work pint one night, let me know! Name your date/time. :)

[identity profile] desayuno-ingles.livejournal.com 2004-08-31 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
nope. it's a really boring beach, though. nothing big to see and usually too many people to have stingrays around.

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2004-09-01 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Alright. ;)

[identity profile] myendeavorca.livejournal.com 2004-09-02 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd love to have a friend in NYC! ;-) Added!
