Pump Up the Ollie

Kevin & I did something today that we haven't done in 6 years: we went to the gym together. It was one of those tentative plans we'd discussed for a while but seemed to never get around to. Finally, on Friday, I asked him if he would come with me since he had already been a couple of times and he could show me around. At 4:45pm, I put on my contact lenses, white socks, shorts, t-shirt and Nikes and we walked to the Porchester Centre.

Sunday afternoons are great for exercising. Everyone who's a gym bunny has already done their thing so the place is usually empty (I'm basing this on my experience with the pool, which is also empty around this time.) We ran for 15 minutes, stretched, did some sit ups then tackled the weight machines. Kevin soon grew bored and left -- he didn't want to push himself too hard and get sore. Maybe tomorrow I'll be thinking the same since I kept going as if I'd just injected myself with steroids. By the time I left, my hands were shaking and I needed to take a hot bath as soon as I got home.

Apart from that, I've spent the day indoors, working on two short stories that I wish to submit to The Stinging Fly before the end of the month. I wish I had a copy of their publication so I could get a better idea of the fiction they print. But nevermind, I just want to get back into submitting my stuff, even if it means receiving rejection letters. It's good for me to become more serious about getting my work out there and receiving some feedback.

I tend to find that the best time for swimming is actually Sunday 1-2pm. Everyone else is either having their lunch or else has just eaten, so you have the place to yourself.

Although today I was cycling at that time instead, but that's another story...

That's a good time too. I've been to the pool before around 12.30 and when 1pm strikes, it's as if by magic everyone decides they have to go home. Heaven.
