Tornado in London

Holy Macaroni!

A tornado has struck North West London. The tornado went down Chamberlayne Road, not too far from Kilburn Lane, where I lived for a year and a half [full story here - thanks for the heads up [livejournal.com profile] sparklielizard].

I know that road well. We walked down it every time we visited Sainsburys or wanted to rent a movie. We also used it for reaching Queen's Park or going to our local pub. Incredible.

London looked horrible this morning, with rain and darkness everywhere. The downpour disappeared on my way to work, then returned with a few thunderstorms and black clouds. An hour later, the sky was blue.

Question for any Brits reading this: have tornados ever appeared in London before?

God my sister lives in Kilburn, near Queens Park station. I spoke to her today and she didn't mention anything about it?? I'll have to ask her when I see her tomorrow.

How crazy! I grew up in one of the most tornado-prone areas of the world, and I think they're totally cool. Do you know how big it was? Are there pictures somewhere?

I wonder if global warming plays any role in this.

when I was a mere child in country-side minnesota we had tornadoes all the time. some severe. my father and older brothers were members of local civil defense group. when storm clouds appeared they would be paged and have to go to the edges of the small town (under 2000 residents) and watch for tornadoes so the alarm could be sounded as needed. when I was a teen we use to go to the small hills south of the town and watch for tornado also, saw quite a few, makes one feel the insignificance of humanity....

I hadn't heard of any ones on this scale before, but apparently there have been. : /
I was listening to the news and the interviews with families returning to their cordoned off homes to collect personal belongings. Not that I remember this, but it sounded like a moment from the blitz.
I hope you are keeping warm and safe from the winter weather, lovely.
