Stay Home, Stay Home, My Gut is Telling Me

A suspected car bomb has been found in downtown London.

I don't know if I feel like using public transport today...

We are only 8 days away from the tube bombings anniversary.

I have this problem too. I don't think it's a sign of my compassionate, sensitive nature. I think it's just my paranoiac tendencies.

Today's bombscare is quite worrying. I am glad I (for no real reason other than that I wanted to listen loudly to Metallica) took the car today.

If you'd grown up in London in the 70s and 80s, you'd be less likely to worry. There was always the threat of the IRA, and we just got used to it. In 1990 there was a major bombing campaign (including car bombs and mortar attacks on Downing Street), and everyone just carried on as they were.

If i get blown up, I get blown up, and worrying about it won't make any difference. I don't have the choice not to commute, so I choose to go about my business without fear. I admit I was a bit wary for a week after the July bombings, but that wore off pretty quickly.

Very valid point. My mum recalls the time there was a bomb scare in the Whitgift Centre in Croydon and instead of completely leaving the area people were standing around watching events unfold.

I recall my primary school being evacuated because of a bomb scare, although all I really remember was that it was raining. :-)

Random bombing is still new to me. Although I grew up in a very violent city -- Sao Paulo -- it was very clear where the violence came from and how to avoid it (avoid certain neighbourhoods, don't take public transport at night, etc.) What unsettles me is the russian roulette aspect of terrorism nowadays.

I guess it takes some getting used to. Not in a good way :/

What unsettles me is the russian roulette aspect of terrorism nowadays

And that's the whole point of terrorism, sadly. :(

war nowadays seems so callow

Yeah, don't you miss the good ol' days of war where you actually knew the planes were coming cos you could hear 'em?

*nodnod*

I grew up here in the 80s and I remember so, so many things - tube drains, bomb scares, actual bombs...I remember the morning the bus exploded in the West End, I remember them actually finding a bomb in Oxford Circus when dad and I were down there doing some shopping when I was 9...my best friend when I was 18 or so, Jenn, had a seriously freaky experience: her mother worked for BBC NEws 24 and they're NOrthern Irish and she corresponded the NI situation, that was her thang, and the IRA sent one of their puzzle clues TO JENN'S HOUSE (she stayed at mine taht week). That was deeply freaky. I got used to, very quickly, finding different ways to get places in case the tube wasn't running or streets were closed off and seriously, I *don't* think of the 7/7 bombings. At all. I get on the tube and I can honestly say that any idea of the incident is just NOT going through my mind. It's strange for me to think that it does still bother people.
I was a bit wary for a few days or so after the 7/7 bombings but figured the tube was SWARMED by so many police, it was probably safer then than it usually is.
