The Mixxion

The day has finally arrived: an X Factor (ex)contestant released a cover of a goth song!

It's surprisingly OK. What next Rhydian? NIN? Alien Sex Fiend? For those 99% of you that don't know, this is a cover of the 90s goth classic "Tower of Strength" by The Mission UK:

I was in high school at the time and I remember recording this video from MTV onto one of my many VHS compilation tapes. It probably sat alongside something by the Cocteau Twins and The Smiths. I never bought any of their CDs, mind. Nor have I ever been to Whitby.

No songs are sacred or off limits.

I couldn't quite bring myself to play the Rhydian clip. It's quite a logical move though, since both opera and goth rock emphasise absurdly heightened emotions and aren't afraid to appear ludicrous. Either that or it's an act of sheer desperation.

I never thought of that comparison between goth and opera, but you are right!
