Dreams with [livejournal.com profile] 4q (Michelle) and [livejournal.com profile] dawnage (Dawn).

It feels as if I spent the whole night with Michelle, making appointments for a dinner party, waiting around in a loft area - in Winnipeg - for an interview (for what? I can't remember.) And listening to mix tapes.

Kevin and I made arrangements for a dinner party with Michelle and a friend of hers. She left us to go to the train station and meet her friend Rachel. She was taking so long so I went after her. I looked through the crowds of rushing people, hidden in their overcoats to avoid the cold dark night, and I couldn't see Michelle. Suddenly I heard somebody calling my name. I saw her by the train tracks. Rachel hadn't come.

Later, I'm in a loft - a renovated loft which was once part of a factory. I play a mix tape on a portable radio and I sing to the song. A girl in a white overcoat comes in and sings along with me. I tell her I'll make a mix tape for her and include that song. Michelle is in the next room, with another friend of hers. We are waiting to be interviewed. We have places to go and we aren't that happy anymore in being there.

Kevin, Joel and I go to the cinema. As we are taking the escalators to the screen room, Kevin mouths the name "Dawn" and points at a woman speaking on a mobile phone. She is wearing a babyblue wool cardigan and speaking into a pink mobile phone. Her hair is cut short, just below her ears, and it looks permed. She's laughing. I tap her on the shoulder. She's surprised to see us. I introduce Dawn to Joel and they begin to flirt. Joel acts sheepishly, almost nerdishly, but Dawn doesn't seem to mind. Suddenly, some friends of her who are also going to the movies arrive and wisk her away.

I walked into the secretary's office to check if any exam scripts had come in and she said to me:

"There's a package for you."

A package for me? For me?

"Yeah!" and she handed me a padded white envelope. It was sent by Judith, a PhD student who shared my office from time to time. At first I thought it was something work-related, until I opened it and pulled out a novel by Ursula K Le Guin. Judith said she'd thought of me when she saw it - how did she know Ursula is one of my favourite authors?!? Not only because Ursula writes about bisexual anarchists in frozen planets, but because she has such a good understanding of Jungian archetypes (and uses them well in her fiction) and how Science-Fiction and Fantasy are more than just ghetto-fiction.

She also sent a card depicting a spider weaving a web, called "Dream Spinning". This spider ate all the bugs he could muster and is moving to greener pastures.

Did I mention how I hate goodbyes? Sending me a farewell gift, and possibly not showing up for any "goodbye party" is the best someone can do for me.

Glowing a spotlight on my head, feeding me cheap chocolate cake, and small-talking ("So, what are you going to do next?") is worse than running long nails over a blackboard. I abhor that sort of stuff. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if my body shut down Thursday night and I wasn't able to come to work on Friday - my final day - because I'm terminally ill.
