A new temp has started work in my office. He's tall, wears glasses and saunters around like a dirty blond Morrissey. Being gay is tough when you project your idols onto unsuspecting temps.
When I was cleaning my desk, I found in the last drawer a carved wodden zebra. My co-workers told me it belonged to another temp. I propped it on top of my monitor so it looks like it's always crossing my field of vision, going somewhere. I also found a ceramic light green bunny. It has a hole in its butt for you to stick marker pens inside.
When students are not around, we joke about them and reconfirm our opinions that all PhD students are morons, and all Admin personnel are so smart. I use my lunch breaks to read other people's Livejournals. I usually only read people who comment in my journal because that's how little time I have. Then I surreptitiously (wow! big word!) answer comments throughout the day.
At 3.30 p.m., I go to the cafeteria on the 6th floor and buy myself a cafe au lait or an Earl Gray. Our office has great windows running across one of the walls. Since the weather has turned cooler, we are constantly shivering. It gets dark around 4 pm. Occasionaly, we stop what we are doing to talk about the American students playing hackey-sack, the homeless men who sleep on the grass and peer into the office windows on the ground floor, or even a child crying on the shoulders of his father because the man doesn't know what to do. More often than not, we are heads down busy because we have work that should have been done yesterday.
I can't wait to buy my laptop this December, sit under the covers of my bed (with my wireless broadband connection) and spend hours writing nonsense on Livejournal. And researching my novel too. What I have written so far is a pile of goo. There's not much horror in my horror novel. Classical music in the background inspires gooey scenes by frozen lakes and endless "what ifs"? Boy, do I have a lot of rewriting ahead of me.
