Real New Year resolutions
Jan. 8th, 2005 10:08 pmKevin, Allison and I were talking this evening about moving to France. I don't know if England is working out for Kevin and I anymore, and Allison liked our idea of relocating. I'm considering taking this Summer to go to France for a few months, possibly for work - probably for study - and see how feasible it would be for us to move there in September.
I don't have a career in London. I've been living here for three years now, working as a temp in a variety of administrative jobs. I suppose those jobs were fine and I gained skills in that area, but I've now hit a wall and I don't know what to do next. I look at the secretaries stuck in the universities and I get scared that my life is heading the same way. I don't want to file for the rest of my life.
I've been also thinking about returning to university. I might apply for a few master's degrees in the next couple of months, in case the move to France doesn't work out. So far, I've been thinking of a master's degree in creative writing because I really don't feel like re-entering academia. I was never good at writing essays, or interested in that sort of stuff. A degree in creative writing wouldn't necessarily get me a job, but it might be a nice opportunity to meet fellow writers, learn more about fiction writing, create a body of work I could eventually approach an editor or publisher with. If nothing else, I'd enjoy my time in university.
If we moved to France, we could restart our learning of french and eventually move back to Montreal. This way, I'd be able to get a job in Montreal outside of the typical anglais triangle of pubs, coffee shops and english universities. On the other hand, those are probably the type of jobs I'd have in France because my french right now is not good enough to get me any better jobs than that. But I'm fine with that.... I think I'd enjoy the new environment, the new people I'd meet and the new things I'd learn.
The point is that I'm stuck in a rut and I need to find a way out.
