The First Good Day of the Year
May. 26th, 2005 02:47 pmThe weather is gorgeous in London today; I call it the first proper Summer day of the year. I came to work with a sweater and a coat but I wish I'd known better so I could have left them at home. From where I'm sitting, I can see people walking up and down Waterloo bridge in shorts and t-shirts. Further away, each cabin on the London Eye is full of tourists taking advantage of the clear sky and the sun. Once in a while a helicopter hovers nearby and I can imagine those tourists stopping what they are doing to snap pictures of it. Beyond the London Eye are the spires of the British Parliament as well as the Big Ben.
At lunch time, I bought a sandwich, an apple and orange juice in the National Theatre's canteen and went outside to eat. I found an empty bench facing the Thames: people jogged past me, boats cruised the waters, and an occasional pidgeon landed on the rails looking for crumbs by my feet. I then went for a walk past the skateboarders that use the lower grounds of the Royal Festival Hall, the London Eye, the Saatchi Gallery, the Aquarium, the hoardes of children on their school trips and the tourists. I walked through an underpass and was suddenly right beside the parliament building, but on the other side of the river. A foreign couple stopped me and asked if I would take a picture of them with the Big Ben in the background. They wished me a good day afterwards.
Back in the office, everyone has gone for lunch. I'm alone and able to write this without feeling worried of getting caught. After work, I'm meeting Kevin and Sissy Allison in a diner by Charing Cross station, and then we are going to see a play written by our friend Mark.
Tomorrow morning, I'm going swimming at 7 a.m. (like I did yesterday) then getting ready for major trash TV session at night. If you are British, you know what I mean...
