Terror in Delamere Terrace
Nov. 13th, 2005 11:41 amKevin and I woke up at 4.30 in the morning with our intercom ringing. I grunted and prayed whoever was drunk, and stuck outside our building, would fuck off and go freeze to death by the canal. But the person kept pressing the intercom for all the apartments, to the point where I had to get out of bed and press the privacy button. I spyed through our door's window but couldn't see anyone in the hallway.
Five minutes later, we hear a loud crashing sound, as if someone has thrown a brick through a window. Both Kevin and I jump out of bed and step out of the apartment. I walk slowly downstairs, peering down the stairwell, afraid I might catch the sight of a robber hiding in the shadows. Nothing seems to be wrong with the windows near the entrance door, so we go back inside. We open the window in the living room and check the back of the building, to see if someone's apartment window was smashed. Nobody there.
I don't have my glasses on, so I return to the bedroom. When I put them on, I open our bedroom window and look down. A man is standing by one of the apartment windows, and I'm now sure that's the window that got smashed.
I ask him "are you ok?"
He replies with a drunk voice "I was trying to get in!"
I close the window but I keep watching him. He walks away from the window, then suddenly breaks into a run and disappears behind one of the houses in our courtyard.
Kevin and I spend the next half hour debating whether we should call the police. I have never seen that guy before so I'm wondering if he followed the blonde chick that lives in the basement, or maybe he's an ex-boyfriend, and her body is lying unconscious in a pile of broken glass while he gets away. Finally, Kevin calls the police but they tell him they had already come by to investigate.
We try to go back to sleep, but the boiler decides to come alive and keep us awake until dawn.
