Kevin & I met up with an old friend of mine this morning at Tate Britain to see the 2006 Triennial Exhibition. Megan used to be my gym buddy and sole office friend during the time I worked in King's College's Nutrition Dept. Even after she left to pursue a teaching career, we kept in touch and occasionally saw each other. However, it had been almost a year since we'd last hung out so today was not only a special occasion to see art work by new British artists (including her brother) but to sit down and catch up.
The most amazing thing happened: Megan mentioned that the two Australians renting her apartment were probably moving out in the Summer and that she would need new tenants (although she owns the flat, she lives with her boyfriend about a block away). I could see Kevin's eyes light up and, before we knew it, we were talking about our lease expiring at the end of July, our desire to find a place just for the two of us, how great it would be to have her as a neighbour, to live in the eastend (near so many friends), explore new neighbourhoods, etc. Her apartment is in a council high-rise (just like the one in the photo above), on the 11th floor. It has two bedrooms, a big living room... lots of space for the both of us! The rent is good too, perfectly manageable. She even said we don't have to put down a deposit since she knows us so well... it will be such a relief to have a landlady who is actually a good friend!
Bottom line: we aren't moving back to Canada anymore. We'll give London another go (yeah, yeah, we always say that) and see what happens this coming year. If we feel that we are falling into somewhat happy careers, we'll stick it out a bit longer over here. But, if we find ourselves back in dull temping jobs, we'll give Megan a month or two of notice and bugger off back to Canada. I think that's a fair plan.
