Another Queer Film Festival
Mar. 31st, 2006 10:48 amLondon's 20th Lesbian, Gay and Transgendered Film Festival has started. I know this because I'm sitting right now at the NFT's cafeteria, surrounded by gayers, a pint of Stella to my left and, to my right, a pair of tickets for the Kuchar Brothers short films'. I have an hour to kill before I meet Lisa and we head for a Thai restaurant near London Bridge, for Kelly's 40th birthday party.
This gay fauna surrounding me... I love it! Young couples on dates as well as old men who look like somebody's greatgrandfather; blonde women holding hands with rastafarian black babes, fresh-faced jailbait laughing at the jokes of wealthy businessmen. They are all here, and even if some of them are not necessarily queer, they fit in and fool me.
...now it's 7:35pm and most of the film-goers have disappeared into the screening rooms. A chef is crying out "who ordered the fish and chips?" I can smell it from where I'm sitting, and my imagination is even adding vinegar to the mix.
I must look very arty, sitting here, in my black shirt, messy hair and stubbled face, writing on this notebook. I don't look very different from some of the other queer boys hanging around. We eye each other, guessing age, orientation, marital status, prowess, economic situation. We imagine entire lives together in the few second we cross path. I notice a line of boys heading for the gents and wonder if they are up to no good in there. It's Thursday but it feels like Friday. I feel light, as if I could sleep without worrying about alarm clocks. These queers make me feel safe by numbers. We cannot be disbanded.
On Sunday, when I come back with Kevin for the Kuchar Brothers' showing, I'm going to buy more tickets. I want to take advantage of this festival, of this first glimpse of summer; I want to see films that will never make it onto DVD. Anybody care to join me?
