I'm back from the beach. We left the coast this morning, just Henrique and I, under heavy rain and the news that one of his friends died this weekend from falling off a waterfall. I'm not sure if I met her last year. Her name was Tatiana and she was about to finish her PhD in Biology. Henrique said she wasn't the kind of person who would climb a waterfall (when the news came that one of his friends had died, he thought of everyone except her.) When we returned to São Paulo, we dropped by Henrique's workplace (Museu de Zoologia), where most people knew her. The tragedy still hasn't hit them, still sounds like a bad joke.

My feet itch from mosquito bites. The sea water was always warm and the swimming pool always frozen. I spent Sunday in bed because of a cold (which Henrique has now inherited -- the perils of sharing a bedroom with me) alternating between flegmy coughs and Ali Smith's The Accidental. We would drive around at night, cruising the coastal town´s deserted bars, the kids passing around a joint, until we found cafes for a midnight cappuccino. In the mornings, we answered together the newspaper's crossword puzzle and read out loud the daily zodiac (it was frighteningly accurate on Monday.) The fridge had an endless supply of coke and beer, Henrique drank too many dry martinis during the day, we took hours to get through lunch, Ricardo & I indulged in good gossip everytime we found ourselves alone by the swimming pool, I would visit Flavia's bedroom when I was in need of conversation, the sun didn't breach my +35 protection layer and I managed to get through Mr & Mrs Smith without throwing a shoe on the television.

On Saturday, Henrique and I drove up to São Paulo, met up with Renato and Reco, and went to Echo and the Bunnymen's gig. The venue was strange, almost like a bingo hall, with a neat parking lot, security that gropped you everywhere, pleasant attendees, orderly line ups to buy beer and screens beside the stage advertising all kinds of rubbish before the band came on. The place didn't sell out and, although the crowd sang along and punched the air, not many people jumped around like Henrique and I. Afterwards, we had a cup of coffee and headed back to the coast.

We are staying in tonight so Henrique can get some rest and recover. I need to call various people in São Paulo and find ways of meeting them. We are going to D-Edge tomorrow night. Tem algum paulistano interessado?
