The simplest tales are sometimes the best; Carys Davies’ collection of short stories hangs on this maxim. Most of these tales centre on just one or two characters – sometimes set in the past, sometimes in the present – with endings that are beautiful in their plainness.
My favourites were “Bonnet”, based on real events in Charlotte Brontë’s life, and the collection’s title piece, “The Redemption of Galen Pike”, about a Quaker spinster who touches the heart of a criminal sentenced to death.
Not all these stories are perfect but all seem to beg for a second read. Most importantly of all, their easy style inspire the storyteller inside.
