my point was, when pointing out white men in the north and black men in africa, was to reiterate that we are the same, despite our colour. There is good evidence that we all originated from the same original ancestors, in Africa. According to "The Selfish Gene", our genes changed during thousands of years, in order to adapt to the different environments. This is an observable fact in nature, in all species. It's scientific, it's documented. This doesn't change the fact that we are all the same.
The violence and inequality in Brazil is one of the biggest in the world. But it's not rooted simply in ethinicity. It's a result of the country being exploited as a colony by Europe (white men), of massive amounts of slaves being dumped there, freed and not given any hope of being fully integrated into society. Violence breeds violence, and that's been my environment when I lived in Brazil.
We now have a socialist president. He has started a country wide campaign to eradicate hunger and strengthen poor schools. Our money, which had been devaluing steadily in these past two years, is now the strongest growing currency in the world!! This is absolutely new to Brazil and everyone is really optimistic that it will help us get out of poverty. Incidentaly, the countries problems had been caused by directives imposed by the U.S. and by right-wing parties that were in power.
Perhaps the U.S. could solve the problems of illegal immigrants by creating some joint programs with Mexico. I'm sure these immigrants would love to return to their home country if they knew they could live a decent life there. I don't know much about this issue, but I hope it works out in the end for you. I know there is tension about it, just as there is over here in Europe.
