The Alarm Clock is Always the Same...

Groundhog Day is one of my favourite movies.

I wish I could be transported to 1980 and live until 1989, like Bill Murray... then have the clocks go back again. Be stuck there, be fated to forever catch the beginning of The Smiths and the fallout, follow The Cure's trail underneath all the fake spiderwebs, wear Doc Martens, despise yuppies and not be called ironic but simply sane. Think of the U.S.S.R. as the strong and evil guys on the planet, not just a pathetic patchwork of bankrupt people; watch Ferris Buller's Day Off and want to dance through some American city's downtown... believe that America can only do good.

And when the Berlin wall comes down, be thrust back back back until I land in the middle of an O.M.D. gig in 1980. Watch 16 Candles and develop a crush. Wonder how to escape the decade, wonder what lies ahead and beyond 1990. Hate Margaret Thatcher and wish for a bomb to blow her away... and not be worried that I might be a traitor for having those thoughts.

Live in Brazil and wear neon green shorts in summer, and neon red wrist bands. Think that Erasure's "A Little Respect" holds the world between it's melodies. And not be aware that they are gay. Not even know what is gay, and what is S&M, what is bisexual, polysexual, fake-lesbian, consumer-queer, pre-packaged pansy... just what feels good and what doesn't. What is dangerous and what is safe. Go to the coast and imagine the future being something like the Thunderdome.

And be allowed to escape the decade when I've grown cold and tired and lucid. Allowed to escape back into the present, with a desire to forever forget the 80s and only look forward to the future. And when Sundays come, not stay home listening to Attack of the 80s on Virgin (like always! like forever!) but somewhere in this city, with people, with lights...

living, living.

Remember how miserable Bill Murray was in the movie? He tried to kill himself so many times and it didn't work!

if you lived through the 80s a million times, you'd probably try to kill yourself while listening to Olivia Newton John.
