Cheerio Frosty England!

Forget chainsaw massacres, forget lunatics in masks who kill babysitters; forget aliens ripping out of guts and definetly forget a state visit by the American President.

If you want to be horrified, watch Horizon.

If I were straight, I would be feeling torn right now about having children. I would be terrified of bringing a human being onto this planet, when Britain is heading for ice age, Central America will become grasslands, and Asia will lose its monsoons. I'll stick with my original plan of adopting and becoming the coolest gay dad in town. And I'll always remind my adopted children that they must not reproduce.

I will begin a tradition in my family, a tradition of adoption. I'll play Bjork in the mornings, when the kids are eating their cornflakes and dancing around the table. We'll form a small community of like-minded people in Brazil's countryside, raising our adopted children who, in their turn, will also adopt. We'll try to stop reproduction. If the mystics from Brazilia are right, and Brazil is the country of the future (where all the survivors of the 21st century will be) then I'll be safeguarding my children's lives by moving there.

He believes in a beauty... he's venus as a boy

Question: If America is so knowledgeable about global warming, has all the specialists who know how our world is going to shit, why is their government blocking any changes??? Madness...

i'm straight as a raw spaghetti but i don't want to have children either - not at all - like NOT. AT. ALL. for those reasons, among other stuff. too scary. ewwww.

[identity profile] idioticpoet.livejournal.com 2003-11-14 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I heartily concur. but I'm kinda zany, so I'll have to go with fusili. But that's not to say that I'm corrupt (unless you want to make an offer, then I'm open to corruption).

[identity profile] moonlightjoy.livejournal.com 2003-11-14 10:12 am (UTC)(link)
hmmm... i see your point, yet i still want a baby of my own. or four.

besides which, if everyone stops reproducing, there will be no more babies to adopt!

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2003-11-16 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
there will always be those people who reproduce... because they don't know how to prevent it, and because they don't have much responsibility. Our human race is not the best thing that happened to this planet.

[identity profile] moonlightjoy.livejournal.com 2003-11-16 09:14 am (UTC)(link)
psst! Some people reproduce because they want to create a person who has some of their genes, and they can see how the person will be similar and different to the person doing the producing.

sometimes, reproduction is on purpose.

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2003-11-16 09:44 am (UTC)(link)
i know... and sometimes reproduction comes from a couple who want to see an example of their love, i guess... but I just believe that we have reached a point in our history where we have to put a stop to it. Culturally, it's madness. Just look at what's happening in societies where family values rule -- massive amounts of children, massive amounts of poverty, crime, misery. China, India, even America.

Then look at societies where the culture has become progressive, where having a child is carefully thought out - Sweden for example... and you see that those societies are doing much better.

I'm not saying that it's the only reason for those things - poverty vs. wealth... but it does count.

[identity profile] moonlightjoy.livejournal.com 2003-11-16 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
this is the thing: religion breeds babies. that's the difference between India and Sweden, or Quebec and Mexico City. There is a crazy population and it's not about "responsability" really.. well, maybe it is. it's about who you're responsable to. There are people out there producing huge families because they feel they are not allowed to stop themselves from having babies. They feel it is their religious duty/responsability to do so. But, i also feel, as you pointed out, that if a couple (or a woman!) wants to have a child, there's nothing wrong with that.

I used to have the same view as you: that there were so many parentless children out there, that people should adopt them instead of bringing extra children into the world. but, I really want a child with my eyes or my intelligence... and it scares me that that child might one day develop schizophrenia.. but i still want one of my own. My own production.

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2003-11-17 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
maybe you could compromise by having a child of your own, and adopting one too!

[identity profile] moonlightjoy.livejournal.com 2003-11-17 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
yeah.. i was thinking about that. it's definitely a possibility! but then i'm afraid i'll prefer one over the other.. it'd be a difficult dynamic. It is being considered.

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2003-11-16 09:45 am (UTC)(link)
and there's also the question of you loving your child so much, you don't want to bring them into a world that cannot possibly be good to them.

:o(

sorry... i've been feeling pessimistic about our world.

[identity profile] moonlightjoy.livejournal.com 2003-11-16 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Ollie, that is soooo sad... I'm not sure what else to say to that.

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2003-11-17 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
it will pass... i'm generally an optimistic person.

this show Horizon is a very good scientific documentary style show... they showed all the investigations and they convinced me. There's a transcript of the show if you follow my link...

basically, although Britain is in the same latitude (?) as Canada, it has a milder winter (hardly ever snows) because of warm currents that come from the Caribbean (this current is called the Conveyor Belt). When this current goes past England, it begins to cool down as it reaches Greenland, becomes denser and returns to the Carribean. But now, with global warming, Greenland is melting and, therefore, the Conveyor Belt is no longer as dense and therefore close to stopping alltogether. When this happens, there won't be as much warm winds coming our way and the winters will become more like Canada - something the British are not prepared for.

that's true as well! They studied deposits of ice in Greenland that were buried over time... and through these deposits they discovered that our planet has a history of shifting dramatically to new weather conditions, as opposed to the once believed idea that it's a gradual thing.

[identity profile] jellyfishfur.livejournal.com 2003-11-14 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
madness indeed.
i like the idea of blasting bjork around the breakfast table.

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2003-11-16 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
when you come visit me and my kids, we'll play her Best Of album and dance around.

;o)

as for the Madness, I basically don't understand how these scientists can have such a poor lobby in your government. They are backed by big businesses, big universities - you would think that the American government would realize what a time bomb this is, and try to begin work in alternative energies. It would be a nice example to give the world, and perhaps America would be the best leader as well in this... but Bush is just pushing us back 100 years, isn't he? How does it look in America for the next election? Do you think he will be reelected?

[identity profile] idioticpoet.livejournal.com 2003-11-14 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
because, the auto industry is very very powerful. Also, because wer'e a big fucking country in terms of landmas, and years and years ago, when cars became increasing prolific, so to, did the superhighway infrastructure. As a result, lots of the old rail routes have been torn up to create bike paths, or have been abandoned entirely. Also, much of the train tracks in this country, are owned by freight companies, so that if there's ever a freight or passenger train who are going to be on the same track, the freight gets the priority.
it's very comlicated, and i can honestly say, I'm not too happy about it myself.
Have you ever read any Buckminster Fuller?

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2003-11-16 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
no. Does he have a website? what books do you suggest?

I posted a comment somewhere else in this post, to [livejournal.com profile] jellyfishfur about the poor lobby the scientists in America have. What the auto industry, the oil industry, should be doing is begin research into alternative forms of energy to replace oil, because otherwise they are just heading for disaster, aren't they?

In any case, even if we stopped polluting today, it would be irreversible. Global warming is already upon us and now we'll just have to brace ourselves for the catastrophes.
