Three of Everything

We have a brazilian saying that goes like this:

"Everything comes in threes. Even tragedy."

When something bad happens in your life, it's usually followed by two other events just as equally terrible. The same can also be said for good fortune.

For example, my housemate Silke returned from a holiday in Germany to tell Kevin and I that she's moving out and moving in with her boyfriend - tragedy number 1. This happens to coincide with the time I want to go to Brazil, and basically affects my decisions about buying a ticket for February - tragedy number 2. Consequently, I have to rethink my plans of quitting my job by the end of January (which landlord wants to take on unemployed gits? tragedy number 3).

But then Silke tells us she knows a french girl who is coming to London to study for 6 months and needs a place to stay. She's young, shy, and she's well recommended by Silke's brother. Her name is Julie and maybe I could practice my french with her when she moves in - good news number 1. Then I arrive at work today and find out from my mom that my dachshund in Brazil, Tete, has had her puppies... six of them! Three black ones and three brown ones. So far, only two have been named (Amelinha and Juninho) - good news number 2. Then I get a phone call from a friend from Montreal, Melissa, who is in town with her mom for the week. They invite me out for dinner tonight. I suspect I won't have to pay a cent...

There`s a french saying: "Jamais deux sans trois," which means that if something happens twice, it is sure to happen a third time. I guess that`s similar to your Brazilian saying.

I like that... it's very true.

in English, it's "when it rains, it pours".

you are too cute seriously...what did you this weekend?

Re: I wish I was too then I wouldn't be at work

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2003-11-24 09:40 am (UTC)(link)
nothing much... saturday we went second-hand CD shopping - I tried finding Generation X but had no luck. I'm seriously considering buying The Clash boxset (The Clash in Broadway) which comes with 63 songs (including rare stuff) and is only 17.99!

Then yesterday I wrote a bit, grocery-shopped... hung out at home basically because it just poured this whole weekend.

what about you?

Re: I wish I was too then I wouldn't be at work

[identity profile] 4q.livejournal.com 2003-11-24 10:07 am (UTC)(link)
oh the clash on broadway is good! you should get it

um I went out for pizza, it was awesome...then on saturday I did school work,

then I went to that gig where my ex propsitoned me....ew I was so upset....then i went to a social, and it was really boring so I drank alot....and then on sunday...I had more school work...and then I had to interview this lady for my research paper, and she provided me with some really awesome information

Re: I wish I was too then I wouldn't be at work

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2003-11-25 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
what's your research paper about?

Re: I wish I was too then I wouldn't be at work

[identity profile] 4q.livejournal.com 2003-11-25 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
it's about the history of adult education, this particular lady was invloved in farm radio forum, and it was really interesting. I could tell you about it if you want

Re: I wish I was too then I wouldn't be at work

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2003-11-25 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
i'd love to!

if you ever need someone to look over your paper, or whatever, it would be my pleasure to help.

:o)

Re: I wish I was too then I wouldn't be at work

[identity profile] 4q.livejournal.com 2003-11-25 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
well it was started by the cbc as a way to help farmers organize, and discuss the issues that were important to them. The had a I guess you could call it ia primer that was sent out to their group with information, and a series of questions for them to discuss in their groups. They woudl then have to submit a report to the cbc and their reports would be read on the radio..It was a really important innovation in adult education. And the model of this program is being used in AFrica and other third world countries now, where some of the only contact they have with the outside world, is through this forum. The lady that I was talking to, brought me pages from her scrap book, and some of the actual literature that was sent out for the broadcasts..she spoke so fondly of it, I wish that I had something so exciting to be invloved in!

Re: I wish I was too then I wouldn't be at work

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2003-11-25 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
but if you are writing about her work, and this programme, then you are helping disseminate it! That's pretty great I think...

any way you can get involved and help them more?

Re: I wish I was too then I wouldn't be at work

[identity profile] 4q.livejournal.com 2003-11-25 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
well for me, I am just trying to raise awarness, unfortunatly that program isn't on the air anymore it stopped in 1965, but the model is being used in other countries, I think it's really fascinating...

she was a really sweet lady I rather enjoyed talking to her. :)

[identity profile] peraventure.livejournal.com 2003-11-24 08:05 am (UTC)(link)
well! that's a rather concise reckoning of the rule of threes! (wiccans have co-opted and named it, but it's obviously not a concept they have sole rights to)

I just usually wonder whom the third one has happened to, since I tend to hear about two at a time.

Dachshund!! Fluffy or short hairs? Awww...my mom has a dachshund. We've had two so far. First one died from the back thing.

Amelinha is such a pretty name! What do those names mean? I love name meanings. I think it has something to do with culture and history and such which I feel I don't have, being adopted and not knowing anything about my background.

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2003-11-24 09:39 am (UTC)(link)
Short hair Dachsund! what's the names of your dachshunds?

Amelinha is like saying "little Amelia", and Juninho is for "little Junior" - it's a sort of habit of brazilians to call all children as an -inha or -inho. So, for example, if your name was Camila, we would call you Camilinha.

How old were you when you were adopted? Where did your parents adopt you from?

[identity profile] peraventure.livejournal.com 2003-11-26 09:00 am (UTC)(link)
I was 4 weeks old. They "got" me from Catholic Charities, but they are not Catholic. I'm that rare breed of Floridian born and raised in the state.

My mom's first was Cinnamon (a red, obviously, I was very creative as a child), but you know how they have big chests and short legs? She named the second one Dolly (Parton) cos she's crazy.

Well, my nick was always Kenderita to my Argentinian friend. Kender was my online name for a looooooong time.

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2003-11-26 09:12 am (UTC)(link)
i'll have to call you Kenderinha then.

[identity profile] peraventure.livejournal.com 2003-11-26 10:13 am (UTC)(link)
hehehe...go ahead!

[identity profile] opiumatic.livejournal.com 2003-11-24 09:37 am (UTC)(link)
there's a similar saying in russian about "the threes".. Bog l'ubit troitzu which means "God loves trinity"

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2003-11-24 09:41 am (UTC)(link)
It would be great if all my LJ friends from different countries would tell me if there's an equivalent in their culture.

;o)

[identity profile] opiumatic.livejournal.com 2003-11-24 09:47 am (UTC)(link)
as long as their cultures have any aspect of christianity influence I'd say.. yes.

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2003-11-24 09:49 am (UTC)(link)
but what about Asian countries, with their mysticism? Maybe there's something similar in Buddhist countries, for example.

[identity profile] opiumatic.livejournal.com 2003-11-24 09:53 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know..

[identity profile] ickycrawlything.livejournal.com 2003-11-24 01:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooooo...I love it, twilight zonish! The same happens with me... usually all coinciding with the number 232! That damn number is everywhere! It seems to hold both bad & good vibrations for yours truly...

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2003-11-25 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
if you add 2+3+2... you get 7! And that's the luckiest number... the number of mystics.

:o)

[identity profile] ickycrawlything.livejournal.com 2003-11-25 08:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah! my birthday is 7-14-77 and my creepy number is 232..WOHOOOOO! I'm so loved ;D

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2003-11-25 09:12 am (UTC)(link)
lol... that's awesome! you should try to read up on numerology and see what they say. Do you know what time you were born? If you do, go to www.astro.com and you can make your astrological map for free.

[identity profile] ickycrawlything.livejournal.com 2003-11-25 09:52 am (UTC)(link)
Oooo I dooo, I will!
