I would like anyone and everyone who reads this to post in here something they would LIKE to do with me SOMEDAY.

Then you could post this in your journal, if you would like, and I'll comment on what I would like to do with you.

Hmmm... There are elections next month here in Flanders and sadly predictions are another increase in votes for the Vlaams Blok. However it would 'only' amount to about 22% of the votes (which is still absolutely frightening), with the Christian Democrats raking in 29%, the socialists 23% and the liberals getting a 17% share. The 'cordon sanitaire' is an agreement by all other parties never to cooperate or form a government with the Blok in any way, so for the time being it looks like they will remain more or less powerless. (The Blok fruitlessly opposed gay marriage for example.)
Even so, ignoring the Blok doesn't take away the root of the problem which is still racism itself. Some people in this country feel that they are being stolen from by immigrants, that health and unemployment benefits, education and other social facilities are being exploited by people who are not entitled to it because they do not belong here. Also the Vlaams Blok, as stated in the article, cultivates a climate of fear. The media is also partially to blame for this. It seems that every time a crime is committed it's blamed on the local immigrants when in fact the culprits are most of the time gangs operating from the north of France. Even so we still have a very low crime rate, but whatever.
Most educated people see right through the Blok's manipulative shenanigans, sadly the so-called 'lower classes' really do think that the far-right have the solution to all their problems. I think it's important to educate these people and raise public conscience.
Some promising news to end: recently the Blok was convicted (but has of course since appealed the decision) of violating the anti-racism law and this could very well put an end to it's generous public funding and as a result seriously impact the power of the party.

PS: Antwerp is not Belgium.

You know, the same thing is happening in England. The BNP (British National Party) is gaining more and more seats - for the same reasons. Still, England, like Belgium, overbalances this by having many people who are not racist.

I also feel that these people don't understand the difference between Immigrants and asylum-seekers. Immigrants are people with professional skills - that's why they are allowed in. Asylum-seekers are the ones that come in, with no documents, and pose a heavier burden on the system. It really all boils down to racism and the fear of the "other".

(100th comment! YOU ARE SO POPULAR!)

Anyway, I just wanted to add that voting in Belgium is mandatory and that many people who are not interested in politics or just fed up/frustrated with current affairs vote for the Vlaams Blok as a form of protest.
Great, huh?

That's similar to Brazil! We have mandatory voting - and even illiterate people have to vote... so they end up voting on candidates that promise them the moon, and elect corrupt shitheads...

(Don't you feel special hanging out with a popular boy like me? :P )
