Two days ago...

I still haven't written anything about John Peel, though I have wanted to ever since I heard the news on Tuesday. Like almost everyone else, I loved the guy and discovered a lot of great music through him.

On Tuesday night, I listened to BBC6 Music at night. I turned on the radio at 10:30 p.m. and caught the beginning of Jane Gazzo's Dream Ticket show. As you would expect, most of her show was a homage to John Peel: she read out emails sent by listeners, or comments posted on the BBC board by musicians such as Jarvis Cocker.

I discovered John Peel when I was in High School, in Hong Kong, and The Smiths Peel Sessions had come out on cd. I'd also read about him on the NME and Melody Maker. Years later, when I moved to England, I sometimes listened to his latenight show. John Peel loved to keep lists: of his favourite singles, albums, live shows... So, for John Peel, I compiled a list of the tracks played that Tuesday night, most of them in his honour, from 10:30 to 11:30 p.m.

Pulp - Sunshine
The Inspiral Carpets - unknown track song from album Life (live)
Morrissey - Let Me Kiss You
Half Man Half Biscuit - I Was a Teenage Armchair Von Fed Fan
The Roots - I Don't Care
Franky Goes to Hollywood - Two Tribes (Peel Session)
Conversation with Holly Johnson
The Beatles - Dear Prudence
The Slits - Instant Hit (Peel Session - one of his favourites)
The Stranglers - Nice and Sleazy (live)
Fleetwood Mac - Albatroz (live)
Siouxsie and the Banshees - Spellbound (live)
Modest Mouse - Ocean Breeze Salty
The Underground Lovers - Losing You
The Inspiral Carpets - She Comes in the Fall (live)
The Zutons - Don't Ever Think Too Much
The Wedding Present - Your Charms (Peel Session)
Unkle feat. Ian Brown - Rain
The Hives - Two Time and Touch
Portishead - various tracks from live concert in Blackpool

I still think BBC6 Music is the best radio station.

Yes, I even saw photos of them having beer in some LA pub. Morrissey recently put together a compilation for the NME, and he included Gene.

She might have played it before or after I tuned in. The show is three hours long.
