May Garth Marenghi Watch Over Me

I'm writing a horror novel. Last night, I had the horrifying realization that this is, perhaps, the hardest genre to write. You can so easily fall into cliches, fail to scare anyone and end up with endless pages of non-suspense. Kinda like most Livejournals. Still, I plough onwards.

I borrowed Kevin's bag so I can carry around my notes, pens and notepad. Instead of reading fiction on the bus, I read over my notes. I jot down new ideas with a red pen. I have difficulty in finding the names of my characters. It's also hard to feel myself in their place, to see things through their senses.

On my lunch break, like now, I do research on the net. I'll probably have to do even more research once the novel is finished. When I look at what I've written, I know there is a lot of editing ahead of me. For now, I remind myself to have fun with it and to not allow myself to get stuck in a corner. Kinda like taking ecstasy. I used to be the last one to come down. I'd find a light in a secluded corner of the club. I would tell myself that whenever the high was ending, if I looked at that light I would go up again. It always worked.

It's really cool that you're writing a horror novel:) I've always wanted to do that. Best of luck!

Thanks! What's stopping you from writing? :)

(weird thing: this comment hasn't come to my email...)

Yeah my email has been weird with LJ as well, I get them but can't reply threw them anymore.

I'm not sure what's been stopping me. Lack of self confidence in regards to ideas and vocabulary I suppose. Thinking I couldn't do it never made me stop and think that I should try just for the hell of it.

I tried writing a novel before and I never finished it... I learned a lot from that experience which I'm now using for this one. I think just the act of doing is more important than the final outcome.

It's cool that you retained experience from that :) You're right on the action being more important than the outcome. Maybe i'll get on it someday soon, your motivation got me in the mood :)

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2004-11-05 10:22 am (UTC)(link)
Cool! I hope you get into it. ;)

[identity profile] camie-chaos.livejournal.com 2004-11-05 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you :) Again, good luck with yours, tell me when it's done :)

do you still need info about lake of the woods. I think I have a bunch. but if you want general impressions i can give you those too

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2004-11-04 02:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes Please! I'll thank you by including your name in the dedication page (for your help in the research.)

[identity profile] 4q.livejournal.com 2004-11-04 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
as if my name wasn't going to be in there anyway :P

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2004-11-04 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe I could even include you as a character in the novel. You could be a camper who gets eaten up by the monster.

[identity profile] 4q.livejournal.com 2004-11-04 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
EEEEEEEEEEE! I love it! make sure you describe me as stunningly beautiful, with a perfect body. lol

I am just kidding. but seriously make me pretty xo.

oh can I be the person who doesn't believe there is a monster?!

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2004-11-04 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, you leave the camp site because you hear a noise and never come back. Then all the other kids sitting around the fire get killed one by one and the last one, while running through the marshes, stumbles upon your "remains". Oh, and you wear hotpants through the whole thing.

[identity profile] 4q.livejournal.com 2004-11-04 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
yessssss. I am going to be so hottt!

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2004-11-04 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
And in the closing credits, all the cast members will be dancing around the fire to Outkast's "Hey Ya". You can then shake your thang!

Ops.

*remembers that this is not a movie but a book*

[identity profile] 4q.livejournal.com 2004-11-04 04:01 pm (UTC)(link)
ha ha! I could do it anyway :P

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2004-11-04 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe that could be the cover for the book!

[identity profile] tete-glitter.livejournal.com 2004-11-04 03:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I love horror novels :)

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2004-11-04 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
That's unusual for a Brazilian, don't you think? Pessoas que conheci no Brasil nao eram chegadas nisso...

[identity profile] tete-glitter.livejournal.com 2004-11-04 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha yes, I guess so.

Vou contar pra ela. :)

[identity profile] strange.livejournal.com 2004-11-04 05:17 pm (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2004-11-04 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I know... zombies is one of my "interests"... so you better remember to invite me to the book launch. ;)
