Owls, Ethiopia and Sore Feet

Kevin and I went to a literary reading last night. It took place at the Owl bookstore, just by Kentish Town Tube. When we got to the bookstore, a few people were already sitting down or drinking wine. We made our way to the back, grabbed a glass of (nice) wine and waited for Kevin's friend Mark to arrive.

The reading was to promote a new edition of Ambit. There were three readers, though only one of them was any good. His name was Donald something-or-other, a red-faced old man who now lives in Amsterdam and writes hilarious poems about zoos and honeymoons with himself. I might copy one of his poems into this journal later (and put it behind a lj-cut, of course.)

Afterwards, some street urchins mildly harrassed us as we tried to find a restaurant for dinner. We settled for the Queen of Sheba, an ethiopian restaurant also near Kentish Town Tube. The food was amazing: the meat were served in different trays, then laid out on this giant piece of pancake. We had a separate basket with rolled up pancakes which we ripped small pieces from and scooped the meat into. Spicy and yummy, I tell you. Highly Highly recommended.

Today, the heating was still down so I had to track to my gym for a shower. Have spent a good part of the morning photocopying and my feet are dead. The only thing keeping me going is the prospect of meeting my good friend Megan this evening for much chat, drinks and movie.

Every time you mention tube stations I can feel how much I miss London! But hopefully I'll drop by again this summer :)

Queen of Sheba, an ethiopian restaurant

Is sheba somewhere in ethiopia then? That's sort of disappointing, from biblical epics I'd imagined it being somewhere terribly wealthy and exotic.

Aden, that was the bad joke everyone thinks of when it comes to Ethiopian food...but I've tried it too and I agree with Ollie...it's amazing food!

giant piece of pancake.

Injeera. You're lucky to have had a good one: I find that they're too far on the 'fermented and vinegary' side of pleasant.

And thanks for the letter. I shall have to respond in kind once I'm organised enough! :-)

I went to a reading at the Owl place once, and it timed in really nicely with a band we were going to see headline at the Bull & Gate shortly afterwards.

But I can't for the life of me remember the person reading (there were two actually), the band that night or even when precisely it was. Making this officially the worst comment in anyone's journal by anyone else this week.

Bah...

***stop press** actually, I remember that one of the people reading was a Scottish bloke who had a bit of the Alan Warner about him, except it wasn't Mr Alan. Which perhaps means that this comment just lowered in quality even further.

And after reading 'bout the restaurant you recommend I think that... I DON'T KNOW WHERE ARE YOU FROM!!! London?? Well... I go to London twice a year (if I can), so if you're talking about a restaurant there, I'll look for it when I'll go!! :D

I have to tell you that I can't connect to journal at work 'cause now they've installed some kind of fucking firewall. So now I'm reading all your post I haven't read in two weeks... sorry if I spam you with a lot of comments!! xDDD
