Owls, Ethiopia and Sore Feet

Kevin and I went to a literary reading last night. It took place at the Owl bookstore, just by Kentish Town Tube. When we got to the bookstore, a few people were already sitting down or drinking wine. We made our way to the back, grabbed a glass of (nice) wine and waited for Kevin's friend Mark to arrive.
The reading was to promote a new edition of Ambit. There were three readers, though only one of them was any good. His name was Donald something-or-other, a red-faced old man who now lives in Amsterdam and writes hilarious poems about zoos and honeymoons with himself. I might copy one of his poems into this journal later (and put it behind a lj-cut, of course.)
Afterwards, some street urchins mildly harrassed us as we tried to find a restaurant for dinner. We settled for the Queen of Sheba, an ethiopian restaurant also near Kentish Town Tube. The food was amazing: the meat were served in different trays, then laid out on this giant piece of pancake. We had a separate basket with rolled up pancakes which we ripped small pieces from and scooped the meat into. Spicy and yummy, I tell you. Highly Highly recommended.
Today, the heating was still down so I had to track to my gym for a shower. Have spent a good part of the morning photocopying and my feet are dead. The only thing keeping me going is the prospect of meeting my good friend Megan this evening for much chat, drinks and movie.

on 2005-01-21 02:48 pm (UTC)Is sheba somewhere in ethiopia then? That's sort of disappointing, from biblical epics I'd imagined it being somewhere terribly wealthy and exotic.

on 2005-01-21 03:21 pm (UTC)"The country Sheba or Saba, whose name means Host of Heaven and peace, was Abyssinia. Located in southwest Arabia on the eastern tip of the Red Sea, Sheba occupied 483,000 square miles of mountains, valley and deserts in the area of present day Yemen. Some historians claim that Ethiopia, on the western end of the Red Sea, was also part of Sheba's territory."
But I thought Abyssinia was Ethiopia -- admittedly I thought that because of a poor joke in a Salman Rushdie novel. Oh, I am so confused.

on 2005-01-21 03:50 pm (UTC)I think she's the Queen of Sheba rather than Sheba (which is a brand of catfood) -- but I may be confused. They probably fought in a Xena episode.

And thanks for the letter. I shall have to respond in kind once I'm organised enough! :-)

on 2005-01-21 11:38 pm (UTC)But I can't for the life of me remember the person reading (there were two actually), the band that night or even when precisely it was. Making this officially the worst comment in anyone's journal by anyone else this week.
Bah...
***stop press** actually, I remember that one of the people reading was a Scottish bloke who had a bit of the Alan Warner about him, except it wasn't Mr Alan. Which perhaps means that this comment just lowered in quality even further.
