Con-Connections & Letters Behind Bars

Prisoners looking for Pen Pals, including gay & lesbians.

[livejournal.com profile] stickblackdress has already sent off her letter to one of them and, after having a look through the listings, I'm now tempted too! Not out of a sense to have a laugh, but more because I love to write (and receive) letters. Surely this is a fool-proof way to meet some people with very different life experiences?

I remember I once almost wrote to Charles Manson. I'd found out his address and was ready to write him a letter but, at the last minute, friends freaked out and thought he'd be able to persuade me to do crazy things through his letters. So they put down their feet in a collective thud and prohibited me from writing to him. Incredibly silly stuff now that I look back and think about it.

I would be curious to know whether anyone else on my friends list has ever corresponded with prisoners?

Ed: I didn't want to write to Charles Manson because I thought he was cool or anything like that. It was more because his address was available and (I think the article) mentioned he wanted pen pals. It was one of those dumb ideas, I guess, that I get every fortnight.

I've considered writing to prisoners before, mainly for the same reasons as you (I love writing and receiving letters, and sharing different experiences with people - I think learning what prison life is like from an actual prisoner would be pretty interesting). I'd be wary about using my own address, though, as opposed to a PO Box, in case they get out and try to find me.

Good point! These seem to be all in the U.S., but you never know. There's also a listing of prisoners with life sentences, or sentenced to death. I guess these people are very hungry for someone in the outside world to show some wish to contact them... I think it could be a cool experience.

[identity profile] malaniat.livejournal.com 2005-02-24 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
heh, I've been thinking about writing to some prisoners as well. The main difference is that I'm tempted because I find them so damn attractive.

Did you have a look through the gay listing? Did anyone catch your eye?

I did have a friend who had a long penpal relationship with Ian Brady. Apprently he loves cats. Who'd have thunk it?

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2005-02-25 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
I don't suppose this friend was also a Smiths fan?

[identity profile] violentlyhappy.livejournal.com 2005-02-25 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
I'd actually like to write to people in prison - it'd be fascinating, especially the people on death row, you'd be one of the last people on earth to know personal stuff about them and have contact with them...haha, morbid much? I'm not weird honest! =o|

I don't agree with it costing money to get the address though.

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2005-02-25 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
You could find out the prison's address, and the prisoners number... that way you could circumvent paying for the information.

I just spoke to Meire on the phone and she send you a big kiss!

Go for it! I once wrote to a death row inmate who's first name is Angel. He's nicknamed "the Railroad serial killer" but I don't know anything about his crimes. I sent him a postcard with a close-up of Venus DeMilo's face. It was tres poetic.

And did you leave your address? I like the suggestion by [livejournal.com profile] ephemeritis of getting a p.o. box. I'm going to inform myself when I'm back in London and then send off some letters.

[identity profile] psyfi.livejournal.com 2005-02-25 07:31 am (UTC)(link)
Hey! that's cool....now i'm not worried about getting bored to death if i were imprisoned. You can write to me!!!:)

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2005-02-25 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you planning any crimes?

The chances of him being able to fly out of America are very slim.

I think I will after I get a p.o. box. It could be a good chance to learn about a very different life, and perhaps help in some small way by exchanging ideas, stories, etc, with that person.

Would you consider doing something like that?
