Swimming and Reading with Dave Eggers (and some other people)

They want me to stay another week at the National Theatre: my organizational skills have gone down a treat. What's that flying over the stage? SuperTemp! Whose that person who should be working instead of posting on [livejournal.com profile] bigbrother_uk? SuperTemp! Who doesn't have time to read all his friends' journals? Super... ah, forget it.

I've gone swimming twice this week. I take advantage of my late start at work (10 p.m.) to go with the early risers; by 7:15 I'm usually up and out of the door. The Porchester Centre is less than a five-minute walk and it doesn't have a big crowd in the morning. At first, I tried to keep up with the guys on the fast and furious lane; as soon as I was reaching the borders, I had to quickly turn so not to let anyone swim over me. But the nagging feeling of being too slow for them kept eating at me until today, when I downgraded myself to the getting faster lane. In this one, I'm the fastest, but I can also do a few slow laps if I feel like catching my breath; I don't have the pressure of 100 kilos of man-meat breathing down my neck, nor do I hold back when I feel like I can overtake someone.

The water pressure from the showers is better than at home. The lights in the shower room are golden and dim, making it a less stark experience than the mouldy shower room in my previous gym. Then I blow dry my hair (but only so I won't catch a cold!), walk back home, and find myself with half-an-hour to eat breakfast. I don't even have to worry about ironing shirts since the people at the NT are very casual about workwear.

That's it: my weeks are very mellow indeed, and I'm loving the available time for swimming. Today, after work, I'm meeting Kevin and Sissy Allison at Liverpool Street Station for us to attend a reading by Dave Eggers, Jonathan Safran Foer and two other authors. My perception of Dave Eggers has always been of a big-headed, overhyped media creation. Would be nice to have my preconceptions destroyed tonight.

I'm in his neighbourhood again - in fact, I walked past that gym the other day and I could smell the rubber mats and the old sweat coming from the windows... I swear I'm destined to have a conversation with him one of these days!
