Too Cold to Play Today

I meant to go swimming this morning but I couldn't muster the will when the alarm bell rang at 7:15, it looked cold outside, it was raining, and the boiler had already come alive (eventhough it was supposed to be dead), making me think that if I closed my eyes for another half hour then I could just shower at home instead of using my gym's (they have awesome water pressure; we don't). Then I sat in the kitchen, eating tasteless white toast, drinking tea, matching words inside my paper journal, but the wooden seats were so uncomfortable that I had to return to the bedroom, where I took off my black shirt and carefully laid it on a chair, unbuttoned my trousers so I could breathe easier, and lay on the bed with a generic fantasy novel to my right (Guy Gavriel Kay, what a disappointment) and the lit bedside lamp to my left.

London hasn't seem Summer today, but a taste of Autumn, with people wearing coats and dark colours, fighting to keep their hair straight as they walk by the Thames on the Southbank, clutching their coffees to their bodies for that extra heat, sneaking looks at the builders hammering and sawing by the Royal Festival Hall, who look more like Viking Gods than working class boys from the Eastend. I went into a World Music store facing the river and asked for anything by The Ukranians because I fell in love with them after I heard their cover version of The Smith's "Bigmouth Strikes Again", sung entirely in their language (and I do believe there are more Smiths' covers in their back-catalogue.) I then did a quick run through Foyle's Books, right beside the music store, marvelling at all those books I'll never have the time to read because there must be one great novel written for every day I have left on this earth (not to mention art books, religious tomes, philosophy tracts, non-fiction titles, biographies, autobiographies, and so on - how do I go about deciding which ones I should read and which ones I should ignore?)

I want to go see a horror movie. Who wants to come with me and hold my hand?

Meet you by the cemetery gates, around midnight, for the late movie session.

You bring the popcorn, I'll bring the blanket.

Don't forget to tell your parents you are sleeping over at my house, and I'll say the same to mine.

Don't forget some candles, and I'll bring my Ouija board.

Did I hear something on the radio about a serial killer on the loose? Nah... just my imagination.

What was that noise?

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2005-07-27 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Sounds like a rusty hook scraping the ceiling car... don't stop smooching me now!

[personal profile] izzybees 2005-07-27 03:14 pm (UTC)(link)
...I haven't been smooching you!

I don't believe you. Let me find my lighter and flick on some light.

See? I'm all the way over here.

Sorry, I can't see you. My eyes have just been gouged out.

Oh bother. I hate it when that happens. Here, take one of mine.

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2005-07-27 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Mmkay, thanks. Can you snap your glasses in half too? I still want to watch the movie.

Okay, but next time bring reinforcements!

I have a feeling, based on this hook poking out of my chest, that there won't be a next time...

Oh for Pete's sake, Ollie! I've got an ice pick stuck right into the middle of my forehead and you don't see me getting all existential about it!

Now. I came here to watch a movie. You can pipe down and enjoy it with me or you can sit there and moan, "Ohh, the hook in my chest, ohhh, the pain!"

Your choice.

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2005-07-27 03:51 pm (UTC)(link)
That time of the month, huh? Can you please try to keep your blood away from my car seats? I just had them dry cleaned the other day.

Hmph. Last time I ever lend you one of my eyes...

By the looks of it, you'll be needing one of my kidneys very soon.

What are we watching, by the way?

Apocalypse Now

The horror...

So I would like to have autumn days here! Hot is unbearable… and, well, I’ve always loved “cold” days besides great books. Better if it’s raining…

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2005-07-28 09:42 am (UTC)(link)
When does it start to get cooler in Barcelona?

Thank you, thank you, thank you...

[identity profile] msanthropist.livejournal.com 2005-07-27 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
now you two take a bow. You are TOO silly and that was too much fun. Oliver, I have those exact thoughts about books myself...I am a true bibliophile and have books stacked in every room of my house, wondering when I will ever be able to read all the books I want to, and of course, where to start! (I'm reminded of that Twilight Zone episode where Berges Meredith wants nothing more than to be left alone in his library to read, and gets his wish when the end-of-the-world arrives but he survives, only to find his much-needed spectacles broken irreparably!)I'm always in the middle of at least 2 or 3 books at any given moment.

AND - I have been craving horror films lately! I usually don't care for the genre as a rule, but do love films like American Psycho, Blue Velvet, Fight Club, The Game, etc. But I have been piqued to see Dark Water, Skeleton Key, and one other...what was it? A new film...recently released...can't think of it...oh! War of the Worlds...

That Twilight Zone episode always horribly depressed me! That would be my worst nightmare!

I know, it was so sad...the poor long-suffering librarian finally gets his heart's desire only to have his dream thwarted by the very isolation he so craved...argggghhhhh...I hear though, that there are eye exercises that can be done to improve your vision...?

I remember that Twilight Zone episode well! I remember thinking that it could be me, because I loved my books so much - sometimes more than my family and friends, when they were bugging me to stop reading so I could eat lunch, or go somewhere.

There's a new British horror movie that looks good: The Descent. It's about a group of girls that go cave-exploring and get trapped there... only to discover there are lizard beings in the cave that want to kill them!

I also want to see "The Grudge". Have you seen it? "The Descent" sounds like it has all the requisite elements for a good thriller...ooooooooo! Lizard beings!

The Grudge was a bit disappointing, though it did creep out Sissy Jennifer. It has lots of interesting shots and freaky looking things.

Ah, what a shame that livejournal has happened about seventeen years too late. It would have been great to take you along to see The Ukranians when they played at The Town And Country Club (when The Forum used to be called that) all those years ago. The support band The Wedding Present were quite good as well.

And I'm sure that was Peter Solowka playing guitar with that false beard on...

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2005-07-28 09:34 am (UTC)(link)
Wow... I had no idea they'd been around for so long. Have you got any of their albums?
