Who Let the Scene Kids Out?

I went to The Insomniacs Ball yesterday. It took place in the London Vaults. There were three stages. Bands were playing from 8pm till 3am, with closing time around 6am. I saw the poor man's Bananarama, also known as The Pipettes. Then I saw the poor man's Libertines, also known as The Rifles. Then I saw White Rose Movement, who were just poor.

Scene kids everywhere. Scene kids who are 17. Scene kids who make me feel old and somebody's parent. Scene kids who take 5 hours to get their 50s hairstyle in place. Scene kids who are too nervous and self-conscious to enjoy themselves. Scene kids who think they are hearing new music. Scene kids who raise their cigarettes in the air, hold hands and shove you because they must get to the front of the stage. Scene kids who are chiselded, clean cut and fuckable. Scene kids who can fit into their younger sister's jeans. Scene kids who don't fight, don't swear, don't drink too much and don't have party faces. Scene kids who live with their parents or in a university's residence. Scene kids who aren't tired from working all day so don't feel like going home by 11pm. Scene kids who party till 6am and don't catch the last tube home. Scene kids who don't watch Sex and the City's first season when they get home because they can't sleep. Scene kids who don't eat cold oven fries found in the kitchen.

Today, the optometrist told me my eye sight had actually improved. It reminded me of the teenage chavs in Westbourne park, almost a year ago, who sniggered that I should go to Specsavers. Turns out they were right. Then Kevin and I shopped for weekend supplies at Summerfield supermarket, ate some burgers with fries and watched The Reckoning, which was equally interesting and anachronistic. As soon as I catch up with LJ, I'm diving back into Michael Connelly's The Black Ice.

happy week end

Ask Pexa, he's always posting them. But, basically, you can get a free account with http://www.photobucket.com and then host them from there. You can also get a free photo hosting account with http://www.flickr.com.

That entire paragraph that began "scene kids" made me really sad.

All probably true.

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2006-04-14 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember being that way, feeling like I was part of something cool, happening, now... then realizing years later that it was just a big rip off of older music (i.e. Britpop). I got that feeling last night about those kids.

i remember the days when i could be bothered to get ready for going out, although i used to spend as little time as possible and then got annoyed when everyone else took ages to get ready. i was always about the drinking and having fun though, i always looked a state by the end of the night no matter how much hairspray i fixed my makeup with!

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2006-04-14 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
That level of enthusiasm depends on your mates being into it, on your free time, on the fact that you aren't tired, etc. Work sucks the life out of me.

You have sumarized, quite nicely, why I don't care to go to many standing room only concerts anymore. Or "shows" as I'd call them if I was, you know, not an "elderly" 26 years old.

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2006-04-14 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
To be honest, I love going to gigs, and I've seen some great ones recently! But, from now on, I'm going to try seeing bands whose music I know beforehand, so that I feel at least slightly connected with what's going on stage. To just show up somewhere, not knowing what's going to happen, requires more energy and patience than I have.

[identity profile] steer.livejournal.com 2006-04-16 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
But sometimes you see something just amazing. I've been to see bands I've never heard of and walked away going "wow oh wow".

[identity profile] kibean16.livejournal.com 2006-04-14 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, scene kids. Ick.

[identity profile] rebelyells.livejournal.com 2006-04-14 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
And it's Jefree (http://www.myspace.com/jeffreestar) the most scene and most stuck up of them all.

I saw him at a show here in CA over a year ago. I didn't really know who he was at the time and he seemed very quiet and not too happy looking. Then I go online to find out that he thinks he's super awesome and better than everyone else.

Probably the kind that's too afraid to dance and have fun for fear that he will mess up his makeup.

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2006-04-14 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
That's just sad! Going out is all about letting loose, dropping the world and losing yourself. I think people last night would have had more fun if they'd stopped watching each other, caring about "looking cool". Granted, I did think they looked awesome, but at the same time I would never want to hang out with them because it would feel like too much work.

And Jefree is just scary. :-)

I like to make myself look good and often wonder small things like "is my hair messed now?" at shows. But I don't go extreme. Screw it, you know. I've come out of shows covered in sweat and looking horrible but I had more fun than those scene kids.

Tonight I went and saw theSTART and danced so much. My toes hurt from pressing against my shoes. Ironically, that's the band I was seeing when I saw Jefree.

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2006-04-15 09:01 am (UTC)(link)
Sweaty gigs are my favourite! I feel all tingly, like I've shared my energy with hundreds of other people. I really love it when it's with a band that I know the music, because then I lose myself in the singing too. ;-)

No British Sea Power then? That's a big shame.

We Are Scientists last night was also full of teenagers. I have to say, indie kids were a million times more sharp, sussed and impressive when I was a teenager. But then I suppose I would say that, wouldn't I...

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2006-04-14 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, I dropped out before they came on stage. Shame really but I was too tired and grumpy. I'll try to catch them some other time when I've had time to listen to their music.

[identity profile] copscopulating.livejournal.com 2006-04-15 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
they all look the same

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2006-04-15 07:57 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, there is an ongoing variation on the same theme.

aii, thank god, no. The one in front with the sad/bored face. Black, long and wispy in the front, short in the back, bangs.

[identity profile] vespatine78.livejournal.com 2006-04-17 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I love going to gigs, getting drunk, and being amazed. But yes at the same time I hate those little girls that run around with perky tits, giggling at everything. Seriously punk isn't about making an ass of yourself for no reason...

I make sure they know their presence is not tolerated if they are going to act like idiots. :) the joys of being a much older skinhead!

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2006-04-18 07:54 am (UTC)(link)
There were plenty of girls like that at the gig. They'd be running around, holding hands, making clear everyone could see they knew all the lyrics. Seriously, most people there were 17 so perhaps it's just normal they behave like that if they are in the majority. Maybe we were like that too when we were 17?
