Horror in Hay: the Prequel

I've bought a fresh box of strawberries for the office. It's my way of making up for the cherries.

The cashier in Sainsbury's couldn't believe I was buying two salmon steaks for £5.99.

I'm wearing a light brown t-shirt with this design. My brother made it. Check out some of his other t-shirts: [livejournal.com profile] chegadesaudade.

I'm seeing Margaret Atwood this weekend. Plus some other writers. It's all going down at the Hay Festival, "the Glastonbury Woodstock of the mind", according to Bill Clinton. I'll be travelling there tomorrow after work with Mr & Ms Muffin, as well as Kevin. We'll be staying at the Baskerville Arms Hotel. There's a castle nearby, and over 40 bookshops in the village. There is also a serial killer on the loose, who will execute us one by one in horrible fashion, until Ms Muffin is left all alone to struggle against him on the highest tower of the castle. And, eventhough he'll fall from the tower and appear to die from the gate's spears traversing his body, I suspect his eyes will open just before the credits roll up.

Hay-on-Wye Castle

There was a famous murderer in Hay on Wye - Maj. Herbert Armstrong (http://web.ukonline.co.uk/ruth.buddell/armstrong.htm) which might be of interest.

Have fun. :-)

Cool. Thanks for the tip. Maybe I can visit his home. :-)

I wish I could go to the Hay Festival! I was looking at the website the other day and thinking about all those bookshops and sighing.

Wow, your brother makes some really nifty stuff!

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 05:01 pm (UTC)(link)
He sells his nifty stuff too. ;-)

It's been a dream for me to go to Hay ever since I heard about it. My only wish now is that the weather is somewhat decent so we can enjoy a bit of the countryside too.

I WANT TO LIVE IN A CASTLE.

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
You are living in the wrong country. :-)

That t-shirt design is pretty amazing! And I'm quite envious about the whole Hay Festival thing. It's the price I pay for living in the middle of nowhere, I guess.

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think the problem is that you live "in the middle of nowhere", but more that you live in such a wide country, where it takes too long to travel anywhere. But are there no literary festivals or events near you? I bet there are some good ones!

Actually, Minnesota Public Radio hosts this monthly program called Talking Volumes (http://news.minnesota.publicradio.org/collections/talkingvolumes/) wherein nationally and internationally renowned writers discuss one of their works in front of a live audience, and the taped session is later broadcast. I've only been to one so far (Neil Gaiman -- and I'm not even that big of a fan of his. He lives in Wisconsin, though, so I thought I should "represent"). Margaret Atwood actually took part a couple years ago when the opera versin of The Handmaid's Tale had its North American debut in the Twin Cities. (I did see the opera, but, unfortunately, didn't see Ms. Atwood).

I'm a big fan of hers. She might have trouble getting rid of me once my lips get contact with her cheeks.

all the strawberries at the two markets I went to today were crap. So I bought blueberries too bloody early. Oh well, they're still nice when they're tart.

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
This particular batch of strawberries was perfect, if not a little too immaculate.

[identity profile] desayuno-ingles.livejournal.com 2006-05-26 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
it's weird when they're like that, isn't it? the flesh is almost...too plump around the seeds.

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2006-05-26 07:54 am (UTC)(link)
These ones glistened as if they were wrapped in plastic.

[identity profile] desayuno-ingles.livejournal.com 2006-05-26 12:13 pm (UTC)(link)
glistened...lovely word! were they limned, as if perhaps from an inner light?

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2006-05-26 12:22 pm (UTC)(link)
More like they had been coated with something plasticky? But they did taste great.

[identity profile] desayuno-ingles.livejournal.com 2006-05-26 01:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I was just trying to find another lovely light-related word.

dude, how odd...I haven't thought of Desmond Dekker in years. Yesterday I started trying to find a copy of Hippopotamus and now I read he's dead.

indeed.

I went camping in Hay-on-Wye once. It's a really nice place. Have a smashing time!

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
It's going to be raining, so it's going to be a fairly indoors type of weekend. That's ok though... I'm looking forward to getting some fresh air outside of London.

[identity profile] armoury-kim.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I went there to stay with friends once, it is a lovely place and is full of antique bookshops. Enjoy :)

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2006-05-26 07:53 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you. We are looking forward to it.

[identity profile] la-mascherina.livejournal.com 2006-05-29 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I hope Ms Muffin has remembered to pack the required Hammer horror movie uniform of white gossamer nightie for that final struggle, could really spoil the weekend if she forgets. ; P
The festival sounds great and the castle looks intriguing, hope you are having a lovely time.

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2006-05-29 07:13 am (UTC)(link)
We did have a great time. And, lucky for us, no killers appeared and Ms Muffin didn't have to push anyone off the castle's tower.
