Pop Will Eat Me Tonight

Remember Philip Howard, the preacher who stood at Oxford Circus every day, preaching "be a WINNER, not a SINNER"? He disappeared, and I read somewhere that he'd been given an ASBO (Anti Social Behaviour Order). Turns out he is now hanging out by Stratford Station, just in front of the shopping centre.

I had never been to Stratford before, even though it's only one tube stop away from Mile End. We wanted to buy some reading lamps, and the nearest Argos was in Stratford. Hearing the preacher as I came out of the station was like a burst of nostalgia, that nice feeling when you spot a familiar face in the crowd. And how deliciously ironic that most of the people walking by didn't understand a word coming out of his speakers.

We stopped for lunch in a cafe and I thought of inviting [livejournal.com profile] sushidog to join us, but I'd forgotten my mobile phone at home. I then temporarily left Kevin on a bench -- drawing pikeys eating chips and Jehovah Witnesses preaching the end of the world -- to go search for music in HMV. I bought CD86, a compilation of indie music from the 80s, including The Pastels, Half Man Half Biscuit, Pop Will Eat Itself and the Wedding Present. Fantastic.

Oh, shame about the phone, it would have been lovely to see you!

Next time I'll make sure to bring it. :-)

We went to that cafe outside the mall, facing the city town hall. Know the one?

So suppose I get an ASBO. Then what? Do I pay it?

If you got an ASBO for being a nuisance to your neighbours, for example, you would not be allowed to behave anymore the way you did (sometimes even being forced to leave your neighbourhood). If you break your ASBO, you can face prison. A better explanation is over here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASBO).

I've got a download of the original C86 tape, which someone converted to mp3 once (at incredibly bad quality, which somehow seems to add to the authenticity). I also had the original cassette myself, but it strangely went missing from a shared student flat at around the same time that my CND "Carry On Disarming" video vanished in about 1991. Hmmm.

Those were the golden days. It's not even bleary-eyed nostalgia, it's just abrupt honesty...

You should check out CD86 then. I think it may have more songs that the tape (20 on each of the CDs.) I've been craving this type of honest indie for a while now, sick of all these wannabes on the chart with zero imagination. Perhaps you can get the tracklisting and download the songs too.
