Walking through Mile End Park yesterday evening, I saw an old man sitting by himself on the grass. He must have been in his 80s. It dawned on me that maybe that man was me, that I had travelled back into the past and was now observing my younger self. It made me think what reasons I'd have for doing that. Sit quietly by myself in a park and wait for my younger self to walk by.

We all dress in black, but some of us are staring at the stars.

Can't wait to come out with you soon!

Does that mean you are cancelling Germany for Feeling Gloomy!?! ;-)

Um... Can I give you an answer on Monday? :D

Maybe just to see yourself young and handsome again? Or maybe because you can't help it. Have you read The Time Traveler's Wife? I really loved it.

I second the recommendation and would also like to name check Lethem's book: As She Climbed Across the Table.

Will also add this to my wish list. Is it a good summer read? ;-)

I'd call it a good read, regardless of the season in which it's read.

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
Nope, I'll put it on my reading's list!

What are you reading right now?

An Encyclopedia Of An Ordinary Life, advanced reader's copy from [livejournal.com profile] evil_onna_stick. It's really quite funny. I imagine the writer is a bit like Erma Bombeck (find her if you haven't ever heard of her) for today. She's written several books about motherhood (Erma's specialty) and her voice is all about "humorous everyday occurrences". I've laughed my ass off in the subway at least once every ride.

woah, that's deep, man! :)

what is Feeling Gloomy? i don't know a lot of those songs, but the cure, depeche mode and communards tracks rule!

Feeling Gloomy is an indie club that plays mostly stuff from the 80s and 90s. They try to play only songs that have "sad" lyrics - so even something like "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor would qualify. And of course The Cure, Depeche Mode and The Communards.

It's actually a good place to just get drunk on cheap beer and sing along to popular tunes.

and they do that every day of the week, or is that theme just on one specific night?

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 03:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Every Saturday, as far as I know. There are also bands (mostly indie) playing until 11 pm, which is when the club starts.

That's pretty damn cool, a fogey goth night!

Also, over here bars do the same thing- bands early, then they do the dj thing...which kinda irks me, not dj's themselves, but their increasing spotlight over live bands...having said that, I'd rather take a dj than a cover band, because, at least with a dj you're hearing original music.

Whatever gig you go to here, even big name bands, they end at 11pm (which is also when most pubs close.) Some clubs then have special permissions to stay open until later (like Feeling Gloomy) ending at 3am. FG is really not that gothy - apart from some of the music. The crowd is very normal(ish).
