I have two theories about Lost and just what the island is.
1. the island Lost is on is eden. It would work with the constant biblical references, the strange way that polar bears can live on an island. How it's always beautiful there. The constant struggle of good and evil with temptation. The "black smoke" could be the charib that is said to guard the actual garden after Adam and Eve were kicked out of it. It would also go with the first episode where they found the cave and there were 2 dead people there and Sawyer joked "Hey the Island has their own Adam and Eve"....
2. It's the Lost Island of Atlantis. It could work with why there's a statue with only 4 toes and how the Island can "vanish" and not be found on the maps...
