A sad world a stone-throw away...

i dont think lj will disappear as everyone is saying, last year after the perm account the same rumours started. Lj might not be at its best with people leaving to myspace or facebook, but that doesnt mean lj will die, we just have to take a look at other journals like deadjournal, greatestjournal (and hundreds more), they are less popular and still alive.

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Thing is, this time they are getting fired! With nobody to run it, it's only a matter of time... I only hope all my LJ friends move to the same new address.

[identity profile] suede.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
they are getting fired but maybe they dont need too much people to run it... *doesnt want to believe it*

definitely if this dies (even i dont think so *lol*) I will move to the same place where most of my friends go.
:(

[identity profile] suede.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
i just thought... if they are selling perm accounts now, it cant die, at least not in the next few years, its not something they have in mind right now, to close the business.

come on, tell me I am right... :S

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I am praying with my entire being that you are right and that it takes a couple of years for things to shut down (or for a new owner to be found)... I haven't backed up my journal! Yikes!

[identity profile] suede.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
i have seen they are talking about it in the perms comm and they arent really nervous, some say its relativly easy to find a new owner to lj...

i am sure it will take more than 2 or 5 years to shut down, i dont even think they will shut lj down, it would be no sense to be able to buy paid accounts today or even perm ones, if they knew they are about to close.

okok lets not talk about it anymore, maybe if we ignore this, it will disappear...

[identity profile] suede.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
okok dont panic!

quoting a friend of mine: " It is eventually cleared up that those numbers were blown out of proportion; 13 out of the same 28 were laid off (17 remain in the SF offices, and more located at the Moscow offices) with not much warning beforehand and/or severance. "

Phew! Thanks for checking it out!

Since our time here may be short, I should probably take this moment to say that I used to think that your userpics were your portrait photos, until you started using the female ones. Kept me guessing for a while. :)

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I've tried a few times to use pics of myself but I can't get used to it. I much prefer using other people's mugs. ;-)

[identity profile] idioticpoet.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup...that's why I've got my cartoonesque self-portrait as my efault avatar...the only difference between it, and rality is that I've gone from having a soul patch to a goattee.

This would never catch on, but in a way I would quite like it if LJ died and we all had to actually communicate with each other on an individual basis using old fashioned mediums such as email and text message.

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
You haven't heard the news? (http://valleywag.gawker.com/5124184/the-russian-bear-slashes-a-social-network)

But what about those people (like myself) who like to write (and read)?!

[identity profile] naturalbornkaos.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Sounds melodramatic - if not a little pathetic - but I've been using LJ so much for so long, I think it'd be a real culture shock to lose it.

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here. :-(

It was my introduction to this whole new way of socialising and interacting with the net... other sites just don't match it for what it offers.

[identity profile] stevek.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. Although I avoided LJ for years, but Lisa persuaded me to get one and look what happened!

I've got no idea where I'd decamp to if LJ went belly up, Facebook doesn't quite ring all the right bells for me the way LJ has.

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
I'd probably sit back and wait to see which system accomodated the majority of my friends - perhaps even have a few accounts going in different places - before settling down in a new home.

[identity profile] ex-louter.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Wordpress.

I was thinking about it anyway - as an alternate journal for all of my failed artz that I may dig later.

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
My brasilian blog is over there and I quite like the system. My favourite aspect is the ability to know how people find you... some of the stuff people type into their search machines is unbelievable!

[identity profile] steer.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I doubt it will fold in the next couple of years after the staff cutbacks.

Still, I would be upset to see it go. I still read every day even if I don't post so much.

Not sure where I would go. Facebook doesn't have any proper threaded comments and blogs don't have the same sense of community.

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Alarm levels have gone down from red to orange.

[identity profile] moveslikegiallo.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to like Blogger, until I used Wordpress and realised it was far superior. But I don't think I'd blog publicly. Hmm. I don't know. PLEASE DON'T DIE, LJ!

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Based on forum here on LJ, the news seems to be good!

I quite like Wordpress, however...

[identity profile] idioticpoet.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yours is the second post I've read about this scare.

Also, I'm again not receiving emails for responses to comments that I leave on others' posts, or emails to comments left on my posts. Guess I'm going to have to resume tracking posts that I've left comments on (y'know, as a backup).

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Drop them an e-mail. If it's only happening to you, it might be worthwhile checking out.

[identity profile] idioticpoet.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
hmm...seems that they've been getting sent to my spam folder (which seems to have been resolved).

[identity profile] zahgurim.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Wordpress. I already have a blog there, actually. They seem to actually do development on their product, unlike LJ which is still very web 1.0. Which is sad, because LJ is pretty awesome.

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
I think LJ still has potential growth, which is the beauty of it. Once they merge the development aspect with their unique features, they could really kick some ass! And to be fair to them, they have already started work on stuff - trying to add bits and pieces that improve its use. It certainly doesn't look the same as it did in 2001, when I joined it. :-)

[identity profile] zahgurim.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
I definitely feel that LJ has growth potential. But when a new company owns it every year or so, it's difficult to keep that momentum.

[identity profile] belacane.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
what's all this talk about livejournal disappearing?

you're not the only one.

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
It looks like the situation isn't as serious as first thought. And if LJ is going to disappear, it will take a few years... so there's enough time for all of us to back up and move to a new home!

[identity profile] vilia64.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I would cry...so, so, much. I have SO much in my journal...

I suppose I'll have to stay late at work and print the damned thing...;)

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
There are a few softwares that allow you to back it up on your computer. And I think you can also transfer all posts to other blogging systems too. LJ itself has more info on it in its FAQ pages.
