Food for Thought

The guy in front of me at Tesco's bought three carrier bags worth of food - all discounted stuff or "value" brand. Enough food to last a week, maybe more. Total expense: £14

I bought dinner for tonight, some marigolds and dish scrubs, a bottle of olive oil, Doritos and salsa dip. Enough stuff to last until midnight tonight if you don't count the oil. Total expense: £17

I'm such a Guardian reader.

Oh cool - looking forward to it. :-)

Today I bought:

Store brand wholemeal bread loaf $1.79
1 litre carton of store brand low fat milk $1.54
Small bottle of almond/coconut body wash $1.00
= $4.33

And that's seriously the least I've spent in one purchase on groceries in the longest time.

Then I got excited because there was a great coupon on the back of the receipt!

And did you win anything with the coupon?

OT, but have you read Before Night Falls (by Reinaldo Arenas)? I read excerpts of it in a grad school workshop, but I just started the book and really like it.

I saw the film and loved it but never got round to reading the book. Where is all the time I need to read these wonderful books?!?

Boyfriend note: Let's take today's lesson and apply it to someone's ongoing opinion that spending more money on groceries means contributing more food to the house. Could it be that midnight Doritos don't say "Guardian reader" as much as they say "this little piggy impulse buys"?

[identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com 2010-10-12 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
What if I bought the Doritos for a certain piggy in the house?

haha, I agree with the last bit.

I just went shopping and usually I buy basic things like fruit and veggies, bread, cheese and jam but I just went half an hour ago and spent 14 Euros on some basics as well as crisps (lovely 'healthy' ones though), a veggie 'Flammkuchen' (I never buy ready-made food but today I needed sth) and chocolate.

Also, I really like quality food and even though I don't spend a lot of money in general, I do spend about a third of what I spend in total on food. But then, where I live the rent is much cheaper than in London!
