Aug. 22nd, 2003 12:05 pmWe wake up with the sun on our faces, no curtains in the bedroom. We lounge around, reading our trashy novels, getting our bearings of a Swedish student apartment. Tina sets the breakfast table; a feast: ham, cheeses, ryvita breads, orange juice, apple juice, milk, coffee, butter, pate, eggs. We haven't had a feast like this in ages.
Because Glenn is adamant about playing the Gamecube Karla brought, we go downtown to buy an adaptor for his television. The city sparkles, the people are uncreased and unblemished. In the Universitetet metro, Tina is outraged by the graffiti over the human rights words on the walls. She tells us the graffiti will be cleaned away by the end of the day. The trains are also devoid of graffiti, as if they were brand new.
We joke about how many cute guys we have seen... "431, 432, 433". In the store selling electronics, the cashier is another god fallen to earth. We joke about taking the escalators that go past his post, over and over, until he realizes we are staring. But nobody pays attention to us. Their beauty is taken for granted, just another aspect of their lives. They don't fret over it. Or cheapen it.
We stop by a cafe for alcohol and lattes. Our table has a good view of the fashionable sidewalk, where the rich parade. Jeans are tight, smiles even more unfamiliar.
At night, a friend of Glenn's and Tina's comes over: Steve. We cook a giant feast of pasta and Karla prepares butter with marijuana. We make garlic bread with the butter and everyone gets stoned. At one point, I'm left by myself in the living room while they smoke a joint in the kitchen. Morcheeba makes me company. When they come back, we watch The Royal Tenebaums. The first time we saw this movie, we weren't very impressed. This time, we fall in love with it. And we realize people hate Gwinneth because she is talented and beautiful.
