LIMA BEANS

Native to tropical America, and called Lima because that is where the original seeds came from, these beans are sometimes called 'the aristocrat of the bean family'. They are rather like butter beans in appearance and are indeed referred to as butter beans in the southern USA. They have a lovely sweet flavour on account of their high sugar content. Unfortunately they are not easy to obtain in this country.

- Elliot, Rose. The Bean Book. William Collins Sons & Co. Ltd. Britain, 1979.

Cooling thermal nature; sweet flavor; beneficial to the liver and lungs; beautifies the skin; increases yin fluids; highly alkalizing (equal to soybeans in alkalinity); neutralizes acidic conditions such as often arise from excessive meat and refined-food consumption. One of the best beans for most Americans.

Also known as the "butter" or "sieva" bean, it is a relatively new member of the kidney bean family. Thriving in warm climates, limas are a favorite in South America. Starchier and less fatty than most other beans.

Yes, I am bored; yes, I have nothing to write about; yes, I'm listening to Enya's Best of because I found it in my mom's CD collection; yes, I spend way too much time on the internet and don't go outside; yes, I'm losing that beautiful tan I got in Bahia.

But I did not write an ode to the Lima Beans!

I wish I had any news. But I don't. My brain can make some assumptions about what's going on in the world, include some commentaries about TV shows and late night movies. Would you like that? Tonight, for example, I'm watching Halloween: Ressurection (it's the one where the dum-dum teenagers think they are in a reality tv show.) I'm watching all the movies my boyfriend would never let me watch in London - getting them out of my system. I also watch the esoteric channel Infinito, or E! Entertainment. The esoteric channel has a show with a medium and it's entertaining to see his hocus pocus with the credulous public. It's like Oprah for the ouija board world. Then, over at E!, there's The Crucible The Michael Jackson Trial. It still freaks me out that they have the court proceedings of the day re-enacted with actors that look like all the major players! I wonder about all those actors that have been paid to sit as the jurors. That's their job: sit all day. I bet they are temps.

During the days I... do nothing. The dogs follow me around everywhere and whine if I close a door on their face. My mom and grandma have their pills to keep them happy; I have Livejournal. I eat bread & butter for breakfast and dinner. The only consistent meal comes during lunch time, so I pack in as many fruits as I can be bothered during the day. Sometimes, I retreat to my bedroom in the afternoon to read, write letters, stare at the mountains, stare at nothing. Sometimes I get agitated and run around for a few minutes outside while the dogs try to leave mud marks on my clothes. Then I sit on a bench and stare at the trees, the mound of sand that the construction workers brought over, the dogs, or nothing at all.

My brother Nicholas was in the hospital for the past few days, with pneumonia. I didn't feel like mentioning it because I knew it was going to be ok. He's home now, safe and sound. In a week's time I will catch a plane to London.
