I didn't want to mention the war anymore, because I'm sensitive to how this sounds a little like preaching -- I think everyone has already made a decision about what they think, and there's no argument which will change their minds.

But ---> I saw the preparations for war in Iraq today, on the telly, and I couldn't help feeling depressed. The cars lining up for petroleum were beaten up, falling apart. The food markets were nothing more than planks of wood with fruits piled on it. The weapons being bought by civilians were ridiculous old, second-hand guns. This is what America is going to invade and destroy, a country already poor and... pathetic!

Saddam is evil. I'm not disagreeing. But can he really get any "weapons of mass destruction" out of there? Aren't they surrounded by sattelites taking ultra modern photos of trucks!?! Seems all so preposterous. All of these thoughts and realizations make me feel very pessimistic about the world.

Every second, every day, something essential gets lost to the unworthy.

i think in america, the media is one-sided. They only show the American point of view. So everyone thinks their country is right... but here in Europe, you come in contact with people from the middle east who have very different stories to tell...

i remember vividly swinging in a hammock in the backyard when I was 12, reading kerouac's The Town & The City and trying (and failing) to imagine war in america. I just couldn't do it. We're not supposed to start wars and, with few exceptions, we never have. I almost refuse to think too long on bush and his war in iraq because I still can't believe we've let this idiot get SO far.

that's my bafflement:

Bush is president of America.

He is so obviously stupid... it must be some kind of elaborate joke.

worst of all is that he's the president on only 24% of the votes, since half of the registered voters voted, and then half of the half that voted voted rebuplican...
