Everybody carries songs that connect them to the past. Some songs we would rather forget, others we can't stop listening to. Everytime I listen to Suede's Animal Nitrate, I remember being a 17 year old in Singapore, of discovering for the first time that there was sexuality in music, and not necessarily concrete sexuality. When I listen to Morrissey's Tomorrow, I go back to the time I fell in love with him, with everything he stood for. It reminds me of sunny days in Hong Kong, being a Junior in High School and making new friends. Siouxsie and the Banshees compilation Twice Upon a Time brings back memories of being stoned and watching her videos, of taking Hong Kong buses, and being alone in my bedroom. But, Siouxsie's first compilation Once Upon a Time reminds me of working in Carrefour's office in Hong Kong, dying my hair black and dark thoughts because of acid comedowns… same goes for Puressence's first album, actually.

I think the Delays Nearer than Heaven might be one of those singles that will make me smile in five years time… and Richard Ashcroft's album Human Conditions. I can also judge where I was in my life by all of Suede's albums…

Ani diFranco reminds me of vegan dancers in Montreal, Lesbians, and the smell of patchouli. Ben Harper makes me think of a guy friend from Montreal who is straight (he's getting married this July to another friend of mine) and who was very comfortable with gays. He would go to gay bars with some friends and watch gay porn on the tellies without flinching an eye… so, yeah, Ben Harper is for cool straight guys and also Glastonbury 98 (I was there.) Goth music generally reminds me of seedy bars in Montreal, having long hair (my hair was once down to my waist), wearing eye-liner on some occasions, and girls in fishnets. The Cure reminds me, always, of my friend Henrique… he was the biggest Cure fan I ever met in my life. Sadly, I don't think he is anymore.

Well… I could just go on and on couldn't I?

music evokes memories in me all the time as well... from as far back as I can remember, there is always a song to go with that time

me too! Even ABBA brings me back memories of being 5 years old! My mom and dad always had vinyl records lying around, so music was always important to me.

Abba always will remind me of my dad...whenever I hear Abba, I revert back to childhood, back when I hadn't a care in the world...especially Waterloo (my dad loved that, and Fernando )

A song that will always remind me of happy memories is "Sweet child O'Mine" by Guns N Roses. I used to always listen to it when I got high after school, and whenever I was happy in general. It reminds me of how much I love all my friends. That song is so euphoric to me now.

Oh and the Cure rocks. For some reason, I'm usually listening to them on rainy nights, so I will always associate their songs with rain and romance.

But yeah... some songs are so powerful, huh? It's almost like a sound picture. A certain song can just bring back a certain image over and over again.

That G&R song reminds me of being 15, before Grunge broke... everytime Axl came on tv, my eyes would go straight to his crotch...

ah! puberty...

What a coincidence, I'm 15 now. But instead of Axl, it's Ed Norton.
