Kitsch is one of my favourite words. Not because I enjoy kitsch, but because understanding the meaning of the word gives me a clearer view of the culture around me. Kitsch is everywhere, but it's not called kitsch. It's called art, entertainment, life, and a whole lot of words that don't fit it properly.
The British public voted Bohemian Rhapsody, by Queen, as the best song of the century. They also voted Star Wars as the best movie, and Lord of the Rings as the best book. What do you think of these choices?
I have nothing against Queen, Star Wars or Lord of the Rings... but I definetly don't think they stand as the best in their categories. I don't even think they make the top 20 (and Queen doesn't even make my top 1000, to be honest.)
The Guardian's weekend Review had an interesting, short, article on this. You can glimpse a good definition of kitsch towards the article's end.
