I woke up at 9.08am. I had two boiled eggs, three pieces of toast and tea for breakfast - after having shaved and showered. I left the house and went to the real estate agents to pick up the keys to our new flat. The agent didn't recognize me when I walked in. I had to ask him for a copy of the lease. Alarm bells everywhere. But he's just a greaseball, I'm not afraid. He gives me the landlord's phone number and asks me to call him.

The day is sunny and warm in London. They say a snow storm is coming this week, that we'll be overwhelmed. For now, it's warm enough to open the windows of the new apartment and let some fresh air in. Feng Shui.

I walked through the tiny apartment by myself. I inspected every corner, every stained coffee mug left behind, every stain in the bathtub, every lack of storage space. There is no ladder for us to reach our roof terrace. Builders are supposed to come in sometime this week and place a new ladder. At least the cracks on the wall above our bed have been painted over.

Cracks have a tendency of not staying closed.

I came back home, made a date with the landlord for 3pm (when I will be back in the apartment, cleaning every stained mirror, rubbing every dusty surface). Kevin had gone to the library and left his mobile phone behind (he's still not back). I washed some clothes, watched Joe Millionaire for 5 seconds, listened to the radio. Joe was an underwear model, and it looks. Desperate women make me sad. So I played Mario Double Dash Kart. My kidult was momentarily happy.

Now here, on this, as always. Some perusing, some replying. Some ticky-box action, then home.

Dude...they made you move into a dirty fucking apartment?

Aren't security deposits so that if you're a fuckjob that leaves the place as a sty or otherwise in a state of disrepair, the people come, clean up after your slovenly ass, and deduct that money from the ducats you paid? Thus, ensuring the next occupant doesn't have to endure the stress of walking into a pile of filth that will be their new home?

Or, maybe we do things different over here?

you are right, they do that here too. But I think the apartment had been on the market for a while, so there was a buildup of limescale and dust. The stained coffee mugs, for example, were left behind and I asked the landlord to take it away. In fact, he took a way 2 garbage bags worth of stuff... now the apartment is looking better.

Well, if there's that much of a buildup, you'd best check out your windows for drafts, and your pipes etc to make sure you're not spending through the nose for your utiltities.

It's alright... we don't have snow here (except for once or twice a year) so we don't have a problem with frozen pipes... we tried all the taps and water is ok. Plus, the Landlord pays the electricity bill!
