We saw “Monster” yesterday. A straight-forward story – no symbolism, no hidden meanings. Coarse, ugly human nature. Fucked up lives. Desperate love. Very good acting. Very simple film-making, bare, stripped down. I tried not to think too much about it afterwards. It was the last day of a long weekend, afterall. I had to keep my spirits up for today.

I woke up around 7 and got ready for work. Tight new trousers, sore leather shoes. Crisp blue shirt, but thankfully no need for a tie. Took the overground train to Caledonia Road Station and trudged through council estates, prisons, dusty cornerstores, until I found my office for this week. Everyone was very polite and nice. My desk is the reception desk.

They hired me to update weblinks. They hired me for 4 days of work. One look at the job and I knew I could do it in one day. By 2pm, I was convinced I could run the company. Through no fault of my own, a problem arose by 3 o’clock with uploading large files to the server and they sent me home. I swung by the library, ran into Kevin, borrowed three books, and have been reading ever since. That’s what people do when they don’t have television.

I’m moving boxes tomorrow so they said I could wear t-shirt and jeans. There’s a girl called Chloe who is very nice to me. She wears black and her hair is curly and dishelved. She’s not the first Chloe I’ve met who looks like that. Do names carry a certain propensity for distinct behaviour? If you put all the Olivers you know in a room, would a common denominator stand out? Everybody is unique, but nobody can escape all cliches. If you are called Brooklyn, or Pammy, are the chances higher for a certain kind of behaviour to coat your personality? Everytime I meet an Oliver (which has been surprisingly rare in my life – but don’t ask me about people’s fucking pets!) I always feel a weird tugging inside of me: I feel as if I’m meeting a long lost twin, but at the same time I want to denounce any similarities and stand proud as a unique individual. I also want to ask them if they are cursed with that horrible question:

“Oliver, as in Oliver Twist?”

"Suzi, as in Siouxsie and the Banshees?" I get that one a lot -- well, I used to when I was younger and gothicker.

That's much cooler than someone singing "May I have some more please?"

i had a roomate/friend in college named Oliver. he was insanely obnoxious, self-centered and inconsiderate....but fun as HELL to hang out with and just a really amusing person

you seem nothing like that...are you tall and skinny perhaps???

hehe

i know many jeff's...i think my name has been used too much and is somewhat 'diluted' so there are no real shared jeff qualities i don't think

I'm definetly not inconsiderate... but I can be self-centered sometimes... and obnoxious only to the ones I love. ;)

I have been tall and skinny all my life. That's definetly an Ollie trait.

You are the second Jeff I know. The first one was my best friend in Uni. He had curly blonde hair, big blue eyes, and he was a very open person... I feel sometimes a bit bad for losing touch with him. He was a great guy.

yeah....i do believe that names carry a certain propensity for distinct behaviour. But, what do you think of a name 'Mega'. Have you met anyone with the name Mega?

no... Only Megan. Names are so heavily cultural aswell... a person's name in one country could be a swear word in another country!
