Dear Ashley,

I'm sitting in my bedroom on a lovely afternoon, listening to a mixed CD sent to me by a friend in New York, with an empty camomile tea mug beside me. I'm writting this letter on a notebook. Tomorrow, I'll take it with me to the local library, type it out on their computer (internet access is free!) and send it to you. I've been wanting to write for a long time but one obstacle kept appearing after another - mostly laziness, as you know, but also moving homes and jobs - and I left too much time go by.

How are the both of you? Have you moved to Boston already? How was the move and how are you adapting? You must be feeling happier about living so close to Montreal. I bet you have gone back a few times already to visit Jen's family as well as friends that are still there.

The main news with us is that Kevin's sisters Allison and Jennifer have come to England to live with us. We rented a beautiful, newly-decorated apartment by a water canal, quite close to downtown. The girls couldn't believe what a nice place Kev and I found when they arrived from the airport. The plan is for both of them to find work and see how it goes from there. As for Kevin, he is starting a Fine Arts Masters degree this September. His thesis, or project, will be a comic book about garbage. I told him he should do something on bananas, since that's what monkeys like best, but he wasn't having none of that. As for myself, I'm doing a lot of temporary work and trying to write during my spare time. It's hard, specially when I think about not having a set career, or even a set income. As time goes by, I also wonder whether Kev and I will ever return to Canada. I would still love to return to Montreal, but I also feel this strange calling to live in Italy or France while I'm still young and willing to do any work (not to mention the British passport that allows me, for now, to do these things.)

When are you and Jen coming to visit us in Europe? Now that we are in a big apartment, we have plenty of space for guests (particularly the ones who bring lots of Coffee Crisps in their luggage!) The other day I was remembering how we once had a Dr. Pepper bet that I would kiss Kevin. Hard to believe that was almost 6 years ago. Best Dr. Pepper I ever won on a bet. I think it would be lovely if we could see each other again for more Dr. Peppers and memories of our awesome time in Montreal.

Much love, xoxo

Is a Dr Pepper bet something on the lines of "what's the worst that could happen" type of bet?
Or am I way off?

Ah! That's a good point, though those ads only appeared after our Dr. Pepper bets. At the time, Ashley and I were single and living in this apartment building. We'd go to gay clubs all the time and we had to buy Dr. Peppers for each other everytime we scored. I was pretty rubbish at this game so I was always buying her Dr. Peppers. ;)

Wait, so are you Canadian or British?

I wish I saved copies of letters I sent to people over the years...

Livejournal is a good place to save letters - I think people tell a lot about themselves in letters, more than when they just write "dear diary" posts.

I'm half British and half Brazilian. I went to Canada for my studies, met my partner, and decided that's where I'd like to live before I had to leave the country (expired visa problems.)

There's this movie where a mom gives her two daughters journals before leaving on a business trip and tells them to write in the notebooks instead of sending her letters, because whatever letters they would write would be better for them to hold on to anyway. Whenever I come across part of an old letter I started but never sent, I'm always shockd by what an effective time capsule it is.

I think we let our guards down when we write letters, because part of our brain is telling us that it's for the eyes of only one person.

awww! Thanks for reminding me to write more letters. I'd gone through a big letter-writing phase and then lost it b/c no one ever writes me back. *sigh*

no, I take that back. Laurie has written me a few times and I get to see her again when I go visit my parents in Clearwater! yay!

That friend I mentioned in my letter, from New York, can you guess who it is?
