It's Kevin's birthday tomorrow and he is turning 30! I'm taking the day off so we can hang out, go to the movies (he wants to see Charlie and the Neverland Factory), eat, drink and be merry. At night, probably a chocolate cake with his favourite fruit (strawberries.) We had originally planned on going to Hampton Court (year in, year out, this plan ultimately fails) but, because we are doing a daytrip to Dover on the weekend, decided to save our money and stay in London instead.
I wanted to get him an iPod but I couldn't afford it, so I got him a book (The Rough Guide to Cult Fiction) and I'm paying for his activities tomorrow (and perhaps throwing a CD into the mix.) I wish I had planned this earlier, saved some money, because I know how happy he would have been to get an iPod -- I have this image in my head of boxes within boxes, stuffed with newspapers, giftwrapped, and the tiny iPod in its centre. Still, I'm thinking that there's always Christmas, isn't there? Turning 30 is not the end of the world.
This morning, before I left for work, I hugged him and said "enjoy the last day of your 20s." He started laughing/crying like a baby and shaking me, which just made me realize how evil I can be sometimes. I have the knack of saying the most awful things (it's the Scorpio Ascendant in me); it's my sense of humour running away with the baby's bathwater; it's the challenge I leave at people's doorsteps and which is rarely taken in. Sometimes, I'm the most misunderstood wannabe genius in the world.
Finally, I have this strange feeling that if I applied for Big Brother next year, I'd get in!

Presents and presence
on 2005-08-02 05:33 pm (UTC)IPOD's are SO expensive!!!! That's what my 14-year-old daughter wanted for her birthday in April! No WAY!!! It's also a big part of why my sister-in-law hasn't spoken to me in almost a month now...weird...

on 2005-08-03 08:31 pm (UTC)I would suggest, for your husband, finding out what are his current interests and then going along with something related. For example, if he loves F1, then get him something related to that... perhaps a ticket to a race? Or a book on F1 racing? I think simple gifts like that which show that you know what he loves mean more sometimes then something super expensive but not necessarily "fun". Also, just taking him out for a meal and a good movie might work too, or even doing something different like going for a hike, a visit to a gallery, etc. Kevin and I spent the day today at a park, then went to the movies (I paid the ticket.) It was awesome!

on 2005-08-02 05:40 pm (UTC)Thank you for the confirmation, I'll remember that for....*moans painfully*... next year. :(
Indeed there is always Christmas, but if he accidentally reads this, you can dish out the old adage: it is the ipod thought that counts.
I don't own a tv, one of my reasons is to avoid programmes like Big Brother. But if you apply and get in, I may be tempted to tune in or at least ring my sister more, she is a BB addict and would keep me updated with what you got upto in the house.
Have a lovely day tomorrow.
