An anonymous brasilian woman called my work phone on Saturday and sang a children's song to my answering machine before hanging up. I'm incredibly creeped out!

I only know one brasilian woman in London, and it wasn't her voice (plus, she would never do such a thing to me.) So I've been cracking my brain trying to figure out:

a) Who is this person and how did she find my work phone?
b) Why did she leave me such a creepy message? (though my co-workers think it's more like the silly humour of someone stoned)
c) Will she be calling again and, if my boss picks up, what will she say?

If the caller was one of you, please let me know.

The song was Amiguinha Xuxa.

Oh, YUCK! I hate it when people do "amusing" things like this, blithely ignorant of the effect it has on the recipient.

I had a "friend" use my library card for half a year (she was a librarian!) and I was so pissed off I broke contact. I honestly thought it was proper identity fraud for a while.

Hope it sorts itself out - xx

I honestly don't know who could do this to me. It must be someone calling long distance, who somehow tracked me down through the internet. But to call on a Saturday shows that she knew I wouldn't be in the office...

Probably a friend who thought they'd "surprise" you..... Bit silly:-/

Could it have been a wrong number?

A very, freakishly coincidental wrong number considering the chances of the person ringing in London and the person they got to being Brasillian :p

Exactly! What are the chances that they would leave a message on the phone of the only brasilian in the building? They clearly knew what they were doing -- I just need to know now if it was just a silly prank.

I really do sympathise with the way you feel about this. If they were not trying to wind you up, they really should have thought about it.

Maybe they thought I'd recognize their voice and think it was cute?

Possible. Foolish, but possible.

What type of phone system do you have at work? Would it be possible to trace who called?

on 2007-01-29 04:49 pm (UTC)
Posted by [identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com
It only tells me the time and date they called. If the phone rings when I'm here, I can see the person's phone number, but it doesn't record it if they leave a message.

Could your IT department tell though?

I'm sure they could. As I just mentioned to Sarah, I have a person in mind who may have been the caller. I'll drop her an e-mail and see if it's her. If she denies it, I'll ask IT for their help.

I know mister. Trust me, I'd rather get a prank call from you than some random brasilian chick.

The message is saved. I'm writing an e-mail to a potential suspect in Brasil tonight; let's see what she has to say.

Now imagine someone singing one of her songs to your answering machine, giggling, then hanging up.

it's the giggle that says to me this is just a person who knows you and thinks it's funny to do that. I wouldn't be creeped out! I mean, I can't imagine anyone really trying to freak you out!

If I were expecting her to call, it would be alright. It's the surprise and anonymity of it that freaks me out.

I wouldn't go crazy worrying about it, unless it becomes a ritual. I've received weird voice mail at home in the past. Sometimes I would play it over and over again to try and discern the voice, but more often than not, it was just a one shot occurrence.

See, if it was someone singing in English, or some other language, I'd laugh it off. But, by singing it in Brasilian Portuguese, it's aimed at me. I agree with my co-workers that it sounds more silly than threatening, but I just wish the person had said who they were. They must have called long distance and I'm just curious to know if there was more to it.

I remember when she tried to seduce latin america, specially in America. If you want to remember the old times, you can get some Playboys with her from eBay.

If it turns out to have been the former singer from Drugstore then I would suggest that you put it onto a CD and sell it on eBay...
