I belong to Sofa Cinema, the British equivalent of Netflix.

My rental queue is running perilously low so I need suggestions for it. Seen any good horror films lately (or know of great classics?) Any films made you weep and fall in love with humanity again? Any action thrillers made you devour your nails? Would love to get some recommendations!

Who's the director? I'm looking but can't find it. Unfortunately, a lot of films available in the US can't be found here.

I saw your post on Leeches... not sure it's something I could sit through without being stoned! In any case, it's not been released here yet. :-)

I saw C.R.A.Z.Y. some years ago; quite cute. Have added The Misfits.

yesterday i watched 'breaking the waves' by lars von trier. it is very bleak but also very beautiful, a combination which has really gotten under my skin.

I love that film, though I'll probably never see it again. I tried to re-watch it once and I had to turn off the DVD player because I was getting upset just thinking about what was to come...

Ollie, have you seen that Spanish movie called Queens? It's quite good, we watched it the other day but I was too lazy to write about it. Also, we watched Before Night Falls yesterday, and we both desperately need someone to discuss that movie...

Posted by [identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com
Queens hasn't been released here yet, but I'll keep an eye out for it. I saw Before Night Falls years ago and really liked it, but can't remember enough to be of any good use in a discussion. ;-)
I think I remember feeling like the book it was based on would be worth while reading.

I just saw...
Two Days In Paris (kinda dumb)
Control (depressing)
California Dreaming (sad but funny)
Iron Man (fun, but probably not on video yet)
Moment of Innocence (beautiful)

In the past few months I've seen and liked...
The TV Set (funny and underrated)
Michael Clayton (exciting and smart)
Lars & The Real Girl (uncomfortable)
Zodiac (long but interesting and frightening)
Shanghai Kiss (cute)

I also recommend anything by Chan Wook-Park

More to come...

Posted by [identity profile] commonpeople.livejournal.com
Oh, I LOVED Two Days in Paris! Really light, but good fun comedy too. Agreed on Control, Michael Clayton and Zodiac.

Don't think I will list Iron Man since superhero movies are not my thing. I've added California Dreamin'.

Persepolis, Jamon Jamon and Planet Terror were some good films I've seen recently.

99 Francs and particularly Le Chansons d'amour were two very good French films I saw in Germany at the cinema, but I think they're also out on DVD here in the UK.

I haven't seen any good horror films in ages, unfortunately. Oh, wait -- The Orphanage was pretty decent for a ghost flick. Nothing groundbreaking; but suitably chilling nonetheless.

The Color of Paradise is a great one in that "restore your faith in humanity" vein. Actually, anything by director Majid Majidi probably qualifies.

I honestly feel as though I'm the last to see any movies I've seen...so, I'm going to assume you've seen all of these but am naming them NEwayz.

Au Revoir Les Enfants
Little Children
Rocket Science (two hours of stuttering/brilliant acting)
L'Enfant
Them!
Lady in a Cage
The Beast of Hollow Mountain
Junebug
Hard Candy
The Dreamers (some people call it masturbatory and I can absolutely see it that way but it is visually stunning, really. I liked it anyway.)
Le souffle au cœur
Into the Wild (despite knowing what's going to happen, it's still really difficult to watch)
Shadow of a Doubt
Holiday (Cary Grant)
Every Girl Should Be Married (More Cary Grant)
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Good Bye, Lenin!

this is kind of ridiculous, I've watched 100+ movies this year and some I really loved but can't remember.

Au Revoir Les Enfants - I'm a sucker for French film so this is added. :-)
Little Children - This was a perfect film that went astray towards the end and became a horribly cliche one! What a disappointment.
Rocket Science - hmmmm, never heard of this one. But I quite like high school films, when they are done well, so this one is added
L'enfant - Another french film I'll happily add to the list.
Them! - Kevin is going to love this suggestion. ;-)
Lady in a Cage - What the heck?! Added!
The Beast of Hollow Mountain - they ain't got that.
Junebug - alright... sounds interesting
Hard Candy - oh yeah, I remember when this came out in the cinemas. Added.
The Dreamers - I've seen bits of it on television and it didn't really grab me.
Le souffle au coeur - french and, therefore, added.
Into the Wild - another friend recommended this to me. I saw the trailer some time ago and promised never to watch it (Sean Penn has pissed me off a few times with his overacting) but I shall bend my promise for her and you. :-)
Shadow of a Doubt - A Hitchcock I haven't seen yet?! Quelle horreur!!
Holiday - seen it already, and will skip the other C. Grant suggestion
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly - in there already! am looking forward to seeing it
Good Bye, Lenin! Oh yes, saw this and liked it. Have you seen The Edukators? has the same main actor and it's brilliant.

Many thanks!!
