Temeraire

Naomi Novik, Temeraire, 2006
This is the first in a series of fantasy novels set during the Napoleonic Wars. Novak re-imagines the period as a world where European powers fight each other with the help of dragons, much like airplanes in the great wars of the 20th century. These dragons come in all shapes and sizes, and have unique abilities (they can spit poison, breathe fire, etc) as well as being able to carry soldiers.

Captain Will Laurence is your average English boy raised at sea, with a golden future ahead of him in society and a vessel under his command. After a battle with a French ship, Laurence finds himself the owner of a dragon egg destined for Napoleon himself - a dragon unlike any seen before in Europe.

Apparently, the film rights have been bought by Peter Jackson. I wonder if the homoerotic subtext between captain and dragon will be left intact in the screenplay.

It is rather, isn't it? Have you read the rest of the series so far? There's definitely something going on!

I just finished this one. That's very interesting that she continues to play up that aspect in the next novels; eventhough she introduces a girl in the novel, Laurence seemed only half-interested in her! :-)

Do you recommend the rest of the series? I thought this one was a page turner but it did sag a little in the middle. I wonder if it gets stronger in the next books.

Some are better than others - I seem to recall there was one that was a little dull, but the rest have all been fine! It could well be the next one that is a little dull actually!

All perfectly readable though. And his lady friend never even comes close to his beastiality urges ;-)

You know the author has an LJ, right? [livejournal.com profile] naominovik ;-)

I added her sometime ago when I got the book but it seems like she stopped updating it. It's cool though that LJ friends originally gave her support when she was writing the first book.

It's what Rattler needs to aspire to!! Massive LJ fandom!

She seems to update in bursts, then nothing for ages. I just pop by every year or something instead ;-)

Thank you but I'll pass this time. I've decided to get through this year the huge pile of books I have/bought which sit on my shelf. In the past, I always said yes to book offers (how could I resist?) and the pile just grew and grew. It's time for me to do something about it!
