I am awake to the trees at the top of the mountain that I see every morning from the seat I use for writing.

I am awake to the cats that rush through green ferns while maitacas fly overhead.

I am awake to the many notebooks that line my passage through Earth.

I am awake to each blade of grass and fallen leaf I sweep into my bag then carry to the composting heap.

I am awake to the banana bread I made last night, a slice of which I just enjoyed with my coffee.

I sleep well these days.

Maitacas are beautiful pests that resemble parrots. They fly into roofs and chew through cables, until there’s a short-circuit that leaves homes in darkness.

My great-uncle used to set off firecrackers to scare them away. But he’s now gone and nobody can be bothered with the noise.

Candle in our kitchen, calls for electricians. The latest they can come is tomorrow. Always tomorrow.

My brother sweeps away Maitaca eggs from the attic and finds cables from a bygone era, no longer in use. He suggests we pull everything out and clear the space.

I thank him for dealing with this.

Suffocating heat broke down by the 9 o’clock soap opera last night, thunders in the distance.

Rain all day today, saving me endless trips to the veggie garden with water filled canisters.

The kitties are nearly 3 months old. I locked myself in the bedroom after lunch and let them nap on my chest. The window’s grey light shone on their little faces as they sought the source of shrill maitacas’ calls.

Our hippie guests caught a bus back to São Paulo. They gave me warm hugs.

Every time I look into the tree line, I hear rumblings in the distance.
